Job Title:

Physician – Department of Otolaryngology, Division Director, Otologist/Neurotologist (Open Rank/Track Faculty)

Department:

The Division of Otology, Neurotology, and Cranial Base Surgery within the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is seeking an accomplished academic otologist/neurotologist to serve as Division Director. This is a unique opportunity to lead and further develop one of the nation’s premier academic otology and neurotology programs within a highly collaborative and well-supported department environment.

The successful candidate will join a thriving tertiary and quaternary referral practice with a large and diverse skull base surgery program, an internationally recognized cochlear implant and hearing restoration program, and a comprehensive vestibular disorders practice. The division maintains a strong regional and national referral base and offers extensive opportunities for clinical innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and academic growth.

The Division Director will work closely with an exceptional skull base team that includes dedicated neurosurgical collaborators and an established multidisciplinary infrastructure supporting complex lateral skull base care. The department is recognized for its strong culture of collaboration, collegiality, and institutional support for faculty development and programmatic growth.

The division also benefits from a robust scientific environment that includes three independent NIH-funded scientists within the division whose work spans hearing science, vestibular disorders, auditory neuroscience, and translational otologic research. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship and academic productivity, with opportunities to further expand translational, clinical, and outcomes-based research initiatives across the division and department.

Clinical responsibilities will include comprehensive otologic and neurotologic care, with opportunities to focus on skull base surgery, cochlear implantation, implantable hearing technologies, vestibular disorders, chronic ear disease, and hearing restoration. The interested candidate will also have the opportunity to perform clinical work at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive pediatric medical centers, extending the division’s otologic and neurotologic expertise to pediatric populations. The Division Director will provide strategic leadership for the division, including faculty mentorship, recruitment, program development, and advancement of the division’s clinical, educational, and research missions.

The successful candidate will actively participate in resident, fellow, and medical student education and will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the academic mission of the department through scholarship, teaching, mentorship, and national professional engagement.

Academic rank, tenure status, and compensation will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The qualified candidate will serve as the William H. Saunders, MD Endowed Professor.

The Department of Otolaryngology
The Department of Otolaryngology The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, combining advanced clinical services with academic excellence in research and education. As a distinct academic department within the Ohio State College of Medicine, it offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management for a full spectrum of otolaryngologic conditions affecting adults and children.

Committed to delivering exceptionally safe, high-quality, value-based care, the department has earned national distinction — most recently rated among the top ENT programs in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. The department’s clinical expertise spans general and specialized ENT care, including allergy and immunology, audiology and hearing disorders, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, sinus and skull base surgery, head and neck cancer treatment, pediatric otolaryngology, sleep apnea management, and voice and swallowing disorders. It is supported by state-of-the-art facilities, including the Ohio State Eye and Ear Institute, the James Cancer Hospital, and outpatient clinics serving central Ohio.

In addition to exceptional patient care, the department plays a vital role in training the next generation of otolaryngologists. Its educational mission includes instruction for medical students, residency training, and nine fellowship programs across multiple subspecialties within Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. A strong emphasis on research drives innovation in both basic science and clinical practice, resulting in numerous publications and contributions to advancements in the field. Together, through multidisciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge technology, and a patient-centered approach, Ohio State’s Department of Otolaryngology continues to improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life for individuals with ENT disorders.

Qualifications

  • MD or MD, PhD degree
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery residency
  • Fellowship training in otology/neurotology
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, education, leadership, and scholarship
  • Experience in skull base surgery and cochlear implantation
  • Evidence of academic productivity and scholarly achievement
  • Leadership experience in academic medicine preferred
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Ohio

Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) 
- Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical, and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their primary career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, which may also include teaching and/or research. ​

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD, DO, or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.​

 

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.​
