Description

Field Surveyor

Full time
Working pattern: Home Working & Field Visits
Location: This role covers the Diss area and surrounding parts of South Norfolk and North Suffolk.

About the team

You’ll be joining Ordnance Survey, working as part of a geographically dispersed network of Field Surveyors across Great Britain.

Our team plays a vital role in capturing and maintaining high-quality geospatial data that underpins the nation’s mapping infrastructure. While much of the role is field-based and independent, you’ll remain closely connected to colleagues through a collaborative and supportive environment - sharing expertise, solving problems, and delivering consistently high standards together.

About the role

Do you thrive on independence, enjoy being on the road, and have the drive to manage your own schedule? We’re looking for resilient, self-motivated individuals to join us as a Field Surveyor in the Diss area and surrounding parts of South Norfolk and North Suffolk.

This is a home-based, field-led role where you’ll plan and carry out surveys, collect geospatial data, and maintain accurate records that meet customer requirements. Working remotely and predominantly alone, you’ll travel across your designated region (and occasionally nationwide), delivering high-quality work that supports Ordnance Survey’s trusted mapping products.

This is not a desk job - it’s an opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, autonomy, and being outdoors in all weather conditions. You’ll operate independently across varied and sometimes remote locations, playing a key role in capturing and maintaining the data that underpins our national geospatial datasets.

Whether you’re starting out or looking to build a career in geospatial data capture, we welcome applications from individuals with the right mindset, resilience, and potential.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and carrying out field surveys

  • Ongoing surveys of large residential and commercial developments on behalf of HM Land Registry, capturing construction progress and recording new features to support mapping and land registration updates

  • Site inspections and boundary investigations undertaken in response to HM Land Registry requisitions, including measurements, evidence gathering and reporting to resolve boundary-related queries

  • Collecting, assessing, editing, and maintaining geospatial data

  • Working to defined specifications and quality standards

  • Managing your own workload and schedule across a wide geographical area

  • Travelling within Great Britain, including occasional overnight stays

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is motivated, adaptable, and eager to develop in a field-based geospatial role.

Essential skills and attributes:

  • Spatial awareness is essential, and we’ll test this as part of selection process

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

  • Good organisation and ability to plan your own workload

  • Ability to work independently in remote environments

  • Attention to detail

  • Comfortable working alone and outdoors in all weather conditions

  • A proactive learner with a continuous improvement mindset

  • Ability to deliver work to defined specifications

  • A collaborative team player within a dispersed team

  • Full UK driving licence

  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays

Desirable experience:

  • Knowledge or experience of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • Experience working with geospatial data (capture, editing, attribution)

  • Understanding of geodata structures and platforms

We encourage applications from candidates with relevant qualifications, practical experience, or a strong interest in geospatial surveying - even if you don’t meet every requirement.

Tools, Systems or Technologies

In this role, you’ll work with a range of modern geospatial tools and technologies, including:

  • Survey equipment: GNSS and Total Station

  • Data capture tools: Tablets and mobile devices

  • Geospatial software: Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

You’ll receive training to ensure you can confidently use these technologies and continue developing your technical skills.

The Rewards

We want you to love what you do and feel supported to do your best work.

Our benefits include:

  • Competitive starting salary of £31,971.00

  • Pension (OS contribute up to 12.07%)

  • Performance‑related bonus (where applicable)

  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays (increasing with service)

  • Enhanced family leave, including paid partner leave

  • Flexible working options

  • Learning and development support, coaching and mentoring

  • Free subscription to OS Maps and access to wellbeing support

  • Volunteering leave and matched fundraising

  • Business use car (benefit in kind)

Location & Working Pattern

This role is a UK Home Working role where you will be based remotely from home or in the field, then travel from there.

  • Surveyors need to live in the vicinity of Diss on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, covering South Norfolk and North Suffolk.

  • Or be willing to relocate to an agreed area before joining the field or on completion of initial training

  • Surveyors will need to work from home, with a suitable workspace

  • Successful candidates must be available for a period of training at our Head Office in Southampton, or in training blocks throughout the year at regionally based locations if appropriate

Security & Eligibility

OS conducts pre-employment checks for anyone made an offer of employment, including identity, right to work, employment history and criminal record checks (via Disclosure & Barring Services (DBS).

Some of our roles may require additional security vetting. We will advise candidates during the recruitment process if additional vetting may be required for that specific role.

This role requires the right to work in the UK at the time of application.  Unfortunately, OS cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Inclusion at OS

Research shows that people from underrepresented groups often hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. At Ordnance Survey, we’re committed to building a diverse, inclusive and welcoming workplace.

If this role excites you but your experience doesn’t match every point, we encourage you to apply. You may be the right person for this role or another opportunity at OS.

We are happy to consider any reasonable adjustments that people may need during the recruitment process, and you will be asked whether you require any during the application process.

Key details

  • Closing date: 23:59pm 2 August 2026

  • Please submit your CV along with a covering letter. In your covering letter, please outline your motivation for applying, your interest in the role, and confirm whether you are willing to relocate.

  • Interviews will be held in person.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a personality questionnaire prior to interview. As part of the interview process, there will also be a spatial awareness assessment.

Who we are

We are Ordnance Survey, Great Britain’s national mapping service and a pioneer in geospatial technology. With over 230 years of trusted data, we empower better decisions, deeper understanding, and meaningful connections to the places we live, move through, and care for.

Three principles one direction

  • Clear the path – Cut the noise. Simplify. Move at pace.

  • Seek the story – Listen. Understand. Speak up.

  • Do what matters – Focus on value.

Our principles unite us in delivering our Data & Destinations strategy with more simplicity, more clarity, and renewed momentum for each other and for our customers.

They’re here to create more good days, and fewer harder ones but only if each one of us plays our part.

Skills required for this role:

Data Capturing, Data Compilation, Information Systems, Management Information Systems (MIS), Process Improvements, Production Planning, Quality Standards, Service Delivery, Survey Methodologies
