JOB SUMMARY
This is an entry-level position with the City’s Distribution Services Department. This position is primarily responsible for performing duties related to the maintenance, repair and installation of water distribution and sewer collection systems and related components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Make excavations in asphalt, concrete or dirt or repair water distribution and sewer collection lines.
- Install, repair and replace underground water and wastewater mains and service laterals, using basic plumbing tools, techniques and methods.
- Install, repair and replace water valves.
- Install, repair and replace manhole covers and rings.
- Clean sewer lines that are stopped with roots and other foreign material.
- Safely dig and shore trenches, using shoring jacks, timbers, ladders and plywood.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- The methods, materials, tools and equipment commonly used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
- Safe work practices, including basic safety precautions for operating power equipment, working in traffic and under other adverse or hazardous conditions.
- Basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Ability to:
- Safely and effectively operate required equipment, machinery and tools to complete assigned tasks
- Understand and carry out both written and verbal work instructions.
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under variable weather conditions.
- Read, write and speak the English language.
- Grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy (75lbs or more) objects repeatedly, on a daily basis.
- Work various shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays and Primary and Secondary on-call as required.
- Perform mathematical calculations.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
- Previous work experience performing duties related the maintenance, repair and installation of water distribution and/or wastewater collection systems.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Licenses:
- Valid Class “C” or greater Driver’s License.
- Incumbents assigned to this position shall be required to obtain a Class “B” or greater Commercial Driver’s License with the appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of employment as a condition of continued employment.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
The essential duties of this position are primarily performed in a field environment where the incumbent can reasonably expect to be exposed to all weather conditions and various hazardous substances such as explosive fuels, oils and other lubricants, dust and moderately loud noise levels on a routine basis. Incumbents in this position can expect to routinely push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 75lbs daily without assistance. Additionally, incumbents in this position should be physically able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel and reach in the performance of their daily duties. Incumbents in this position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and Primary and Secondary on-call as required.
This position has been classified as a “safety-sensitive” position. All incumbents assigned to a “safety-sensitive” position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
