About the Role
We are looking for a passionate and driven Environmental Specialist / Assistant Environmental Manager to support and strengthen our environmental compliance, pollution control, and sustainability initiatives. This role will be responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, managing environmental monitoring programs, supporting regulatory engagements, and driving continuous improvement in environmental performance across the site.
The successful candidate will work closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and external stakeholders to maintain regulatory compliance and uphold best environmental management practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental laws, permits, licenses, approvals, and company requirements relating to air emissions, Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (IETS), Scheduled Wastes, solid waste, noise, soil, groundwater, stormwater, and environmental protection facilities.
- Monitor environmental compliance obligations and proactively identify, escalate, and mitigate compliance risks.
- Support Department of Environment (DOE) submissions, regulatory reporting, inspections, and communications with government authorities.
- Maintain accurate and traceable records of permits, approvals, monitoring reports, waste disposal records, audit findings, and regulatory correspondence.
- Coordinate environmental monitoring programs including emissions, wastewater, groundwater, soil, ambient/perimeter noise, and other regulatory requirements.
- Review laboratory reports and monitoring results to identify trends, compliance gaps, exceedance risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Develop and maintain environmental KPI dashboards, compliance trackers, trend analyses, and management reports.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of IETS and Air Pollution Control Systems (APCS) to ensure operational effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections to assess pollution prevention controls, chemical and waste storage areas, stormwater management systems, bunding, drainage, housekeeping, and environmental protection facilities.
- Ensure environmental monitoring equipment and pollution control systems are operated and maintained in accordance with regulatory and operational requirements.
- Support Scheduled Waste and general waste management activities, including waste classification, labeling, inventory management, storage compliance, licensed contractor coordination, and disposal documentation.
- Support environmental reviews for new projects, Management of Change (MOC), engineering modifications, procurement activities, construction projects, and commissioning activities.
- Develop, update, and improve environmental procedures, SOPs, monitoring plans, emergency response procedures, checklists, and training materials.
- Drive environmental awareness programs, toolbox talks, and engagement initiatives to foster a strong environmental compliance culture.
- Support sustainability and environmental improvement initiatives to enhance overall site environmental performance.
- Participate in internal audits, external audits, corporate assessments, consultant reviews, and regulatory inspections.
- Coordinate audit preparation activities and ensure timely closure of findings and corrective actions.
- Support environmental incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective/preventive action implementation, and effectiveness tracking.
- Assist in environmental emergency preparedness activities, including spill response drills, equipment readiness inspections, and response capability improvements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Production, Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, Quality, and EHS.
- Coordinate with external laboratories, consultants, waste contractors, vendors, and government authorities on environmental compliance matters.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Management, or related studies.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in environmental compliance, environmental management, EHS, manufacturing, semiconductor, electronics, chemical, or industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of Malaysian environmental regulations, DOE requirements, Scheduled Waste Regulations, air emissions, wastewater treatment systems, and environmental monitoring programs.
- Experience managing or supporting Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (IETS) and Air Pollution Control Systems (APCS) is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and environmental auditing processes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, investigation, and report-writing skills.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis tools.
- Certified Environmental Professional in Scheduled Waste Management (CePSWaM) and/or Certified Environmental Professional in Industrial Effluent Treatment System (CePIETSO) would be an added advantage.
- Experience working directly with regulatory authorities and managing environmental compliance reporting.
- Experience leading environmental improvement projects and compliance initiatives.
