Description

Under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor, the Plumber I installs, troubleshoots, performs preventative maintenance, and repairs plumbing equipment and distribution systems involving work of a varied nature with minimum supervision. This work is accomplished throughout the 100 buildings and 235 acres of Brandeis’ Campus. 

 Must have extensive knowledge of sanitary codes regarding the installation of plumbing systems and associated equipment. Must have a minimum of five years’ experience in the general maintenance field and be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic maintenance skills. 

 

The hourly rate for this position is $47.29. This is a 40-hour work week.

This position is a Local 615, 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) position.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Functions:

  • Communicate assignments, schedules, and work status updates with supervisors, staff, and campus partners.

  • Assist with work prioritization, coordination, and distribution as directed.

  • Train, orient, and provide guidance to staff as assigned.

  • Serve as a liaison between union staff, supervisors, contractors, and campus departments.

  • Collaborate with contractors and campus personnel as needed.

  • Attend meetings and obtain required permits as necessary.

Main Functions:

  • Install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, equipment, fixtures, and related mechanical systems.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on plumbing distribution systems, pumps, valves, pressure regulators, and laboratory equipment.

  • Install and repair piping systems using appropriate tools and techniques.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and work instructions to complete installations and repairs.

  • Perform testing and inspections to ensure systems meet specifications and code requirements.

  • Identify materials, maintain records, complete reports, and update work orders using the department’s computerized work order system.

  • Diagnose and resolve plumbing issues independently with minimal supervision.

  • Support campus operations during emergencies, events, annual shutdowns, opening of school, and commencement.

  • Operate ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and other equipment required to access work areas.

  • Install appliances and equipment as needed.

General Functions:

  • Follow OSHA and university safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.

  • Report building damage, equipment issues, and maintenance needs.

  • Respond to emergency service calls as needed.

  • Maintain accurate logs, time records, and shift reports.

  • Participate in training to maintain and enhance technical knowledge and skills.

  • Establish positive working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and campus community members.

  • Adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.

Job Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking. 

  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces. 

  • Must work on ladders, bucks trucks, scaffolds, and pits. 

  • Manually lift up to 60 pounds. Heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods. 

  • Work inside and outside all campus buildings and grounds; including on rooftops, in vaults, and outside throughout campus property. 

  • Work will be performed in and outside during all New England seasons. 

  • Drive a University Vehicle. 

Education/Work Experience/Licenses:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, vocational or technical training required.

  • Valid and current United States Driver’s License required.

  • Valid Massachusetts Journeyman’s Plumbing License required.

  • Valid Massachusetts Master Plumbing License required.

  • Valid Massachusetts Certification as a Backflow Prevention Device Tester required.

  • OSHA 10 preferred training.

  • 5 years total work-related experience.
