A Day in the Life

This position is remote to enhance our competitive edge and expand our cross-functional collaboration efforts. This role will require 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

         

         

The Senior Patient Access Support Specialist for the Interventional Cardiology Therapies Operating Unit serves as a senior subject matter expert responsible for supporting and facilitating patient access to Medtronic’s renal denervation therapy. This individual has advanced expertise in U.S. health insurance plans, payer coverage policies, prior authorization, and denials and appeals management, and assists physicians and hospitals in navigating complex coverage processes on behalf of their patients.

 

In addition to supporting complex and escalated cases, the Senior Patient Access Support Specialist leads customer education efforts and is a key resource for inquiries related to coverage pathways.  This role provides training on Medtronic’s patient access support for renal denervation, including demonstrations of the secure portal, and manages registrations and support tickets for the program.

 

As a senior team member, the Senior Patient Access Support Specialist serves as a mentor to Patient Access Support Specialists. This individual provides guidance on complex payer scenarios, shares best practices, and supports the development of team capabilities. This role also monitors payer trends, identifies coverage barriers, and collaborates cross‑functionally with reimbursement, market access, and commercial partners to support effective patient access strategies.

 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on patient access processes, payer coverage policies, prior authorization requirements, and denial management related to renal denervation therapy. 
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits. 
  • Check requirements for prior authorization and initiate as requested by the customer. 
  • Provide education/training to healthcare providers and their staff on general payer medical policy requirements and guidelines for submission of prior authorization and appeal requests. 
  • Coordinate required paperwork and clinical notes for submission in a timely and comprehensive manner as required.  
  • Facilitate submission to payers of prior authorization and appeal requests on behalf of the requesting healthcare provider and patient. 
  • Ensure all requests are submitted in accordance with payer processes and timelines.  
  • Monitor authorization status and provide timely updates to customers and internal stakeholders. 
  • Provide support for complex or escalated prior authorization and appeal cases. 
  • Manage registrations and support tickets for the patient access support program and ensure appropriate case documentation and routing. 
  • Respond to customer inquiries related to patient access support, coverage, and insurance processes. 
  • Deliver customer presentations and demonstrations on patient access support workflows, portal navigation, and coverage considerations. 
  • Stay up to date and informed on commercial and government payer coverage and prior authorization requirements.   
  • Identify and communicate trends in payer coverage decisions, authorization requirements, and denial patterns to internal stakeholders. 
  • Maintain accurate reporting and documentation related to payer processes, coverage decisions, and program activity. 
  • Collaborate with reimbursement, market access, clinical, and commercial teams to address coverage challenges and improve patient access strategies. 
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials and resources for providers, hospitals, and patients. 
  • Mentor and support Patient Access Support Specialists by providing guidance on complex cases, payer policies and scenarios, and best practices. 
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient access workflows, training, and customer experience. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Must Have; Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in case management, reimbursement support, prior authorization, or utilization review
  • Or Advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in case management, reimbursement support, prior authorization, or utilization review

Nice to Have

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement processes, payer coverage policies, medical necessity requirements, denials, and appeals
  • Experience supporting reimbursement or patient access programs within the medical device or healthcare industry
  • Clinical background such as nursing or allied health experience
  • Experience providing education or training to healthcare providers or internal teams
  • Familiarity with Medtronic reimbursement policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a subject matter expert and mentor within a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to clinical, administrative, and payer audiences
  • Excellent customer service and problem‑solving skills with the ability to manage complex issues independently
  • Strong organizational skills including documentation, prioritization, and multi‑tasking
  • Experience using CRM systems or patient support program platforms
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and cardiovascular or renal disease states
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence in a highly matrixed organization
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • High degree of initiative, accountability, and self‑motivation
  • Travel Requirement: Up to 10% travel.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$101,600.00 - $152,400.00

 

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others)

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
