About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Assistant Manager – Australian Tax & Accounting to join a growing professional services team supporting Australian clients.
This role is suited to an accounting professional with strong experience in Australian taxation and public practice accounting, combined with the ability to review work, manage client engagements, and provide guidance to junior team members.
You will work with a diverse portfolio of Australian businesses, including SMEs, privately and family-owned companies, trusts, partnerships, foreign subsidiaries, and other middle-market organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and support Australian tax, accounting, and business advisory engagements across a portfolio of clients.
- Prepare and review Australian income tax returns for individuals, companies, partnerships, and trusts.
- Prepare and review financial statements, tax computations, workpapers, and other compliance requirements.
- Provide guidance on Australian taxation matters, including CGT, Division 7A, GST, and FBT.
- Support tax planning activities and identify appropriate tax strategies and recommendations for clients.
- Research and resolve more complex accounting and taxation matters.
- Participate throughout the full client engagement lifecycle, ensuring work is completed accurately and within agreed timelines.
- Build strong working relationships with Australian clients and senior stakeholders.
- Participate in client discussions, presentations, and advisory conversations.
- Review work completed by junior accountants and provide technical guidance, coaching, and feedback.
- Help manage team workflow, work allocation, quality, deadlines, and engagement risks.
- Keep abreast of developments in Australian taxation and accounting regulations and share relevant knowledge with the wider team.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance quality, efficiency, and client service.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Commerce, Business, or a related discipline.
- Approximately 4–5 years of Australian tax and accounting experience, preferably within Australian public practice.
- 1 year in people management/team leadership role
- Strong hands-on experience preparing and reviewing Australian tax returns and financial statements.
- Good understanding of Australian taxation requirements, including CGT, Division 7A, FBT, and GST.
- Previous experience reviewing the work of other accountants and providing technical guidance.
- Team leadership or supervisory experience is highly preferred.
- CA, CPA, or equivalent professional qualification, completed or in progress, is an advantage.
- Experience supporting SME and middle-market Australian clients is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical accounting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to engage directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
