Position Summary:

• Performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader in assisting, planning, directing, and evaluating patient care on a medical-surgical unit and emergency department. Manages all supplies, equipment, and supervises all personnel on the unit and promotes team efforts with physicians and personnel of other departments.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:

• Plans, assesses, directs and participates in the delivery of medical-surgical nursing care.
• Assess patient on admission and records the physical assessment and nursing needs upon admission and throughout stay.
• Identifies and documents patients plan of care including nursing diagnosis and interventions on admission, reviews and updates information every shift.
• Identifies and documents patient/significant other teaching needs upon admission and facilitates, documents appropriate teaching, and response to teaching.
• Develops discharge plan upon admission which accurately reflects patient and/or significant others ability to manage care after discharge and referrals are made based on identified needs.
• Promptly and accurately completes investigative reports as required.
• Communicates patient needs and status changes effectively and appropriately with Medical Staff.
• Makes frequent patient rounds to assure patient safety, quality care and satisfaction.
• Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications.
• Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used meds: action, dose, and side effects.
• Observes seven rights for administering meds: right patient, right drug, right dose, right method, right time, right reason, and right documentation.
• Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration.
• Administers blood and blood products following policy and procedures.
• Initiates and maintains IV access according to policy and procedure.
• Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures for Omnicell stations.
• Maintains knowledge base through attendance at hospital sponsored in-services and staff meeting.
• Reviews patient order upon admission and every shift. Reconciling any discrepancies with lab, x-ray and EMAR.
• Maintains skills necessary to operate all Emergency Room equipment to ensure a safe environment for the ill/injured patient.
• Assists with case management tasks as delegated by the Director of Nurses. 
• Evaluates the quality of nursing care in compliance with the established standards of nursing practice.
• Accurately performs chart audits and facilitates education and quality improvement.
• Identifies problems in patient care and assists in formulating plan of action to solve problems.
• Practices within legal boundaries of nursing practice act and according to hospital policy and procedure.
• Maintains the required inventory of supplies and equipment on the medical surgical unit.
• Assures Fitness Center Monitor log is checked at the beginning of each shift.
• Determines equipment needs and assures equipment is maintained in condition required by department standards.
• Facilitates favorable relationships between the medical-surgical unit, Medical Staff, and other hospital departments and seeks input regarding nursing care.
• Facilitates problem resolution among peers as observed by DON and peers.
• Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff and Director of Nursing toward the organization.
• Interacts with patient, family, employees, and departments in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner as observed by Director of Nursing and peer input.
• Fosters mature professional relationship with fellow employees in a courteous friendly manner as measured by management observations and peer input.
• Maintains professional composure and confidence during stressful situations.
• Assists with the management of nursing department functions and supervises the medical-surgical unit and emergency department employees.
• Properly demonstrates the ability to make patient assignments to the nurses based on patient’s acuity and nurse’s ability.
• Observes nursing personnel’s time management skills and discusses identified needs with individual and Director of Nursing if needed.
• Reviews the patient order, progress notes, vitals, and lab results daily. Evaluates information to ensure all needed orders, tests, and interventions have been addressed by nursing personnel under the direction of the charge nurse.
• Helps complete evaluations and accepts new staff assignments as preceptor.
• Accurately performs chart audits and facilitates education and quality improvement. 

General:

• Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
• Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Heart of Texas Healthcare System.
• Interacts with patient, Medical Staff, family, employees, and other departments in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner as observed by Nurse Manager and peers.
• Fosters mature professional relationship with fellow employees in a courteous friendly manner as measured by management observation and peer input.
• Participates in in-service programs, in safety, infection control, staff meetings, committee meetings, and assigned yearly education.
• Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

Qualifications & Education:

• Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure. Bachelor of Science in Nursing; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. BLS required within 30 days of hire; ACLS required within 90 days of hire, and TNCC required within 1 year of hire. 
• RN License to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in the State of Texas or Active Multi-State RN Compact License (Employees with RN Compact Licensure are required to obtain Texas RN License within 90 days of hire date.) 
• Two years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse, supervisory experience desired but not required.
• Demonstrates ability in nursing practice. Leadership and management abilities and effective oral and written communications skills, basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
• Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to bend, squat, push, stoop, lift and pull as needed especially in fulfilling job responsibilities.
• Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.

Work Schedule:

• Day Shift 6:45am to 7:15pm
