Job Summary
The Technical Lead provides senior functional and technical leadership within the Automation Solution Delivery team. The incumbent is a recognized subject matter expert responsible for leading the design, delivery, enhancement, and sustainment of enterprise automation solutions that support operational efficiency, service quality, and business process transformation across the University.
This role combines hands-on technical leadership with project and service oversight. The Technical Lead leads complex automation initiatives, guides solution design and implementation, supports production operations, and establishes development and delivery practices that improve reliability, maintainability, security, and scalability. The role works across multiple initiatives and platforms, including workflow automation, robotic process automation, integrations, APIs, and related cloud-based or enterprise application services.
The Technical Lead is expected to provide day-to-day leadership to direct reports and other technical team members, coordinate delivery work, mentor staff, and work closely with managers, analysts, architects, business stakeholders, and partner IT teams. The incumbent also completes senior-level design and development work for high-priority or high-complexity initiatives, with an approximate balance between leadership and hands-on delivery that may shift based on operational and project needs.
Organizational Status
The Automation Solution Delivery team is responsible for delivering and sustaining enterprise automation services and solutions that improve business processes, support institutional priorities, and enable secure and effective exchange of information across systems. The team works closely with UBC IT teams, project delivery groups, campus partners, vendors, and other stakeholders to provide project delivery, enhancements, operational support, and continuous improvement for automation-related services.
The Technical Lead reports to the Senior Manager and works closely with other managers, technical leads, developers, analysts, architects, and business stakeholders across the University. The role may support work across multiple portfolios and initiatives, including project delivery, sustainment, integrations, digital workflow solutions, robotic process automation, and other strategic automation initiatives.
Work Performed
- Provides senior technical leadership for the planning, design, development, implementation, and support of automation solutions, including workflow applications, robotic process automation, system integrations, APIs, and related software services.
- Leads complex technical initiatives from intake through deployment and post-implementation support, ensuring alignment with business requirements, architecture standards, security requirements, and operational support expectations.
- Acts as the senior technical resource for automation projects and services, guiding solution approaches, reviewing technical designs, resolving complex issues, and supporting timely delivery of project and operational commitments.
- Works with managers, business analysts, architects, and stakeholders to define technical scope, sequence delivery work, identify risks, and recommend options that balance business value, delivery timelines, and long-term maintainability.
- Provides leadership and oversight across the software development lifecycle, including analysis, solution design, build, code review, testing, release planning, deployment, documentation, and transition to ongoing support.
- Leads and contributes to hands-on development, configuration, and implementation work for complex or high-priority automation initiatives.
- Establishes and reinforces technical standards, delivery practices, and quality controls for the team, including secure development practices, testing approaches, release readiness, monitoring, and support documentation.
- Guides the team in applying sound design patterns and integration approaches for enterprise automation solutions, including use of APIs, event or message-based patterns where appropriate, data mapping, exception handling, and auditability.
- Reviews and troubleshoots complex production issues, removes blockers, coordinates technical recovery activities, and drives root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Supports prioritization and execution of project and operational work by helping assign tasks, monitor queues, coordinate dependencies, and escalate risks or resource constraints to management.
- Collaborates with management on delivery planning, roadmap refinement, and service improvement initiatives by assessing technical complexity, operational impacts, resource needs, and sequencing options.
- Provides mentoring, coaching, and technical guidance to developers and other team members, including onboarding support, knowledge transfer, peer review, and development of team capability.
- Contributes to performance feedback for team members by identifying strengths, development areas, and opportunities for growth in technical and delivery practices.
- Ensures that technical and operational documentation is complete, current, and fit for sustainment, including architecture artifacts, support procedures, implementation records, and knowledge transfer materials.
- Supports service management processes by helping ensure work is triaged appropriately, service commitments are met, incidents are addressed effectively, and changes are implemented with appropriate review and communication.
- Builds strong working relationships with campus partners and internal IT groups to understand business process challenges, identify automation opportunities, and support practical, sustainable solutions.
- Evaluates emerging tools, techniques, and practices relevant to automation delivery and software engineering, and provides recommendations to management on adoption, standards, and continuous improvement.
- Participates in hiring activities, including technical assessment, interview participation, and onboarding support, as required.
- May supervise student, temporary, or contract resources, and may provide project-based direction to staff assigned to initiatives.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Effective technical leadership within the Automation Solution Delivery team is essential to the successful delivery and operation of enterprise services and automation initiatives. Decisions and recommendations made by the Technical Lead directly affect solution quality, service reliability, delivery outcomes, security posture, stakeholder confidence, and the efficient use of University resources.
Failure to provide sound technical direction, appropriate oversight, or effective issue resolution could result in service disruptions, project delays, compliance or security risks, reputational impact, reduced client confidence, and significant operational inefficiencies affecting faculty, staff, students, and administrative units.
Supervision Received
The Technical Lead works under the general direction of the Senior Manager and has considerable latitude in carrying out responsibilities consistent with the goals, priorities, and service commitments of the functional area.

Provides supervision, technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, and project direction to direct reports and other technical team members. May assign and review work on projects and operational tasks, provide input into hiring and performance discussions, and oversee the work of student, temporary, or contract resources as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of eight years of related experience including at least two years of managerial experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex software development, automation, or integration initiatives in an enterprise environment.
- Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to teams with both project delivery and operational support responsibilities.
- Strong experience with software development lifecycle practices, including requirements analysis, design, build, testing, deployment, release planning, and production support.
- Experience with business process automation platforms and approaches, such as workflow tools, low-code platforms, robotic process automation, and related integration technologies.
- Experience designing and implementing APIs, integrations, and secure data exchange solutions across enterprise applications.
- Experience working with cloud-hosted and enterprise application environments, and with modern development, monitoring, and support practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical troubleshooting, resolve highly complex issues, and make sound recommendations under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and monitor work across multiple priorities and deadlines.
