The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) supports safe, efficient, patient-centered care in the pre-operative and post-operative areas of Tennessee Surgery Center. Working under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or provider, the CCMA performs delegated clinical and support tasks within training, demonstrated competency, facility policy, and applicable scope-of-practice requirements. The CCMA plays an important role in preparing patients for surgery, monitoring and reporting basic clinical observations, supporting patient flow, maintaining a safe environment, and contributing to a positive surgical experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Prepares patients for surgery by obtaining and documenting vital signs, confirming NPO status, reviewing delegated pre-operative checklist items, and providing clear instructions to support a safe and efficient surgical workflow.
• Assists with pre-operative and post-operative monitoring by observing vital signs, patient comfort, level of alertness, and other assigned clinical observations, promptly alerting the RN or provider to any change in patient condition.
• Performs focused clinical observations and delegated medical-assisting tasks within CCMA scope, recognizes findings that require follow-up, and communicates patient concerns or abnormal findings to the supervising RN or provider.
• Reinforces pre-operative and post-operative instructions as directed by the RN or provider and helps patients and families understand routine workflow, discharge processes, and when to seek assistance.
• Documents vital signs, patient observations, delegated care activities, and other required information accurately and timely in the electronic medical record in accordance with facility policy.
• Assists with safe patient transport, transfers, comfort measures, and mobility support, using appropriate body mechanics and requesting assistance when needed.
• Performs approved point-of-care testing, or other delegated clinical procedures only when trained, competency-validated, ordered or authorized as applicable, and permitted by facility policy.
• Responds promptly to patient needs while contributing to a clean, safe, and efficient clinical environment through room turnover, equipment cleaning, supply stocking, and adherence to infection-prevention standards.
• Collaborates effectively with surgeons, RNs, anesthesia staff, and other team members to support smooth patient flow, optimize outcomes, maintain patient privacy, and promote a positive, patient-centered environment.
• Performs other duties as assigned in clinical and business office setting.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification required and must be maintained throughout employment.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification must be obtained within three months of employment when assigned to pediatric patient care or as required by facility policy.
• Ability to accurately obtain and document blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, oxygen saturation, pain score, height, weight, and other basic measurements within training and facility policy.
• Ability to recognize and promptly report changes in a patient's condition, abnormal vital signs, increasing discomfort, altered level of alertness, or other concerns to the supervising RN or anesthesia/provider team.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and accurate clinical documentation preferred.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide compassionate, respectful, patient-centered care to patients and families.
• Strong time-management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced surgical environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, RNs, anesthesia providers, clinical staff, and support personnel.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA requirements.
• Competence in following infection-control practices, bloodborne-pathogen precautions, safety procedures, emergency-response expectations, and applicable regulatory standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move for extended periods during the workday.
• Ability to lift, move, or assist in positioning patients and equipment weighing approximately 20-50 lbs, with assistance and proper equipment as needed.
• Exposure to a typical ambulatory surgery center environment, including potential contact with bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, disinfectants, and medical equipment; required personal protective equipment must be used as indicated.
• Scheduled hours may vary based on surgical volume and patient-care needs; occasional overtime or schedule adjustments may be required.
