The Regulatory Requirements Engineer is the technical bridge between the ever-evolving global regulatory landscape and Ford Energy's system engineering organization. This role owns the translation of complex, often ambiguous regulatory and code language (UL, IEC, NFPA, NEC, UN38.3, regional grid interconnection codes) into precise, testable, and traceable engineering requirements.

The engineer acts as an early-warning system for regulatory risk, ensuring that BESS products are designed to pass certification the first time, avoiding costly redesigns, schedule slips, and market-access delays. This is a highly cross-functional role that requires equal parts regulatory fluency, systems engineering rigor, and stakeholder communication skills.

What you'll do...

• Regulatory Monitoring & Interpretation
• Continuously monitor updates, revisions, and proposed changes to UL 9540/9540A, IEC 62619/62933, NFPA 855, NEC, UN38.3, and regional grid interconnection standards (IEEE 1547, CA Rule 21, etc.).
• Maintain a living regulatory horizon-scanning register that tracks upcoming code cycles and their anticipated effective dates by jurisdiction.
• Interpret ambiguous or conflicting code language in coordination with legal, certification bodies, and external regulatory consultants.
• Build and maintain a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction compliance matrix for all markets in which Ford Energy products are sold or deployed.
• Requirements Engineering & Traceability
• Decompose regulatory clauses into atomic, testable, unambiguous engineering requirements suitable for inclusion in the system requirements architecture.
• Own and maintain bi-directional traceability links from regulation → requirement → design element → verification test in the requirements management tool.
• Partner with the Requirements and Test Methods Authoring Engineer to ensure regulatory-derived requirements have corresponding validated test methods.
• Facilitate requirements walk-throughs with systems, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering leads.

You'll have...

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience interpreting and implementing regulatory/code requirements in energy, automotive, or industrial products.
• Experience with grid-scale or automotive regulatory frameworks (UL 9540/9540A, IEC 62619/62933, NFPA 855).
• Strong technical writing and requirements management skills (DOORS, Jama, or similar preferred).

Even better, you may have...

• Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
• Direct experience with stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Prior experience working directly with UL, TUV, or other NRTL reviewers on standard interpretation.
• Familiarity with international grid codes (EU, UK G99, Australia AS/NZS 4777) for global market expansion.

• This position is based in Dearborn, Michigan. Periodic domestic and international travel expected to support supplier sites, global partner coordination as needed.

This position is a salary grade 6 and ranges from $74,300-$124,500.,

This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $86,600-$144,900.,

This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $99,100-$166,200.

Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.

Internal applicants: moving into this role may result in an adjustment to your current compensation based on the posted pay range for this role, taking into consideration your qualifications and other relevant factors.

Company: As Ford establishes a wholly owned subsidiary focused on Battery Energy Storage Systems, this role will initially be employed by Ford and is expected to transition to the subsidiary within one year.
