What you'll do...
The Assistant General Manager, Transportation supports the overall leadership, direction, and execution of Walmart's transportation operations within a distribution network. This role is responsible for helping ensure the safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective movement of freight while delivering exceptional service to stores, clubs, customers, and supply chain partners. The Assistant General Manager partners closely with the General Transportation Manager to drive operational excellence across transportation planning, fleet readiness, safety, compliance, associate development, and continuous improvement initiatives. This leader leverages data, technology, and cross-functional partnerships to optimize network performance, improve service levels, and support Walmart's supply chain strategy.What You'll Do
Lead Transportation Operations
- Support day-to-day transportation operations to ensure on-time delivery performance and execution of business objectives.
- Lead teams responsible for transportation planning, dispatch, routing, driver support, and freight movement.
- Monitor operational performance and service metrics while implementing strategies to improve efficiency and customer outcomes.
- Partner with Distribution Centers, Fleet Maintenance, Store Operations, and Home Office teams to support network priorities.
- Ensure operational readiness to meet changing business demands and customer expectations.
Drive Fleet Readiness and Equipment Utilization
- Support efforts to maximize fleet availability, utilization, and reliability.
- Partner with Fleet Maintenance teams to ensure preventive maintenance programs support operational needs.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve asset productivity and reduce downtime.
- Assist with fleet planning decisions involving company-owned, leased, and third-party transportation resources.
- Support initiatives that optimize total cost of ownership and equipment lifecycle management.
Leverage Data and Technology
- Analyze transportation, operational, and financial data to identify trends and improve performance.
- Monitor key performance indicators and execute action plans against identified opportunities.
- Support implementation of digital tools, automation, predictive analytics, and emerging technologies.
- Partner with Technology, Analytics, and Supply Chain teams to improve operational visibility and decision-making capabilities.
- Promote a culture of data-driven problem solving and accountability.
Lead Exception Management and Business Continuity
- Assist in managing transportation disruptions, service failures, weather events, and operational escalations.
- Support contingency planning and business continuity efforts to minimize service impacts.
- Drive operational preparedness for both anticipated and unexpected challenges.
- Coordinate resources across functional teams to maintain service commitments during disruptions.
- Lead resolution efforts for transportation exceptions while minimizing impact to stores and customers.
Promote Operational Excellence
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, cost management, service, and quality.
- Utilize root cause analysis and problem-solving tools to address operational challenges.
- Implement transportation best practices and Walmart's One Best Way standards.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to simplify processes and improve network efficiency.
- Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures and operational expectations.
Ensure Safety and Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture for associates, drivers, contractors, and business partners.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, EPA, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support accident prevention, risk mitigation, audit readiness, and compliance initiatives.
- Lead incident investigations and corrective action processes as needed.
- Partner with Safety and Compliance teams to maintain operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
Develop Talent and Associate Engagement
- Lead, coach, and develop transportation managers, supervisors, and associates.
- Create an environment focused on engagement, accountability, development, and inclusion.
- Support talent reviews, succession planning, workforce planning, and leadership development efforts.
- Recognize and reward performance while promoting continuous learning and growth.
- Foster a workplace culture where associates feel respected, supported, and empowered to succeed.
Manage Strategic Partnerships
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across Supply Chain, Transportation, Distribution, Maintenance, Human Resources, and Operations teams.
- Support transportation providers, carriers, and supplier partnerships to ensure business objectives are achieved.
- Participate in business reviews and performance management discussions with key partners.
- Assist with escalation management and issue resolution involving transportation service providers.
- Identify opportunities to improve service, efficiency, and collaboration across the transportation network.
Support Sustainability Initiatives
- Promote Walmart's sustainability goals through transportation efficiency, fuel reduction, and operational optimization efforts.
- Support initiatives that reduce waste and improve environmental performance.
- Encourage associate participation in sustainability programs and community engagement activities.
- Help drive awareness of sustainable transportation practices throughout the operation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Transportation, Logistics, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience leading transportation, logistics, supply chain, distribution, or fleet operations.
- Experience managing leaders and associates in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Experience utilizing operational and financial metrics to drive business performance.
- Experience managing safety, compliance, and workforce initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in large-scale transportation operations or private fleet environments.
- Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and transportation compliance requirements.
- Experience with transportation management systems, routing systems, and fleet operations.
- Experience implementing Lean, Continuous Improvement, or Operational Excellence methodologies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience leading cross-functional projects and change management initiatives.

The annual salary range for this position is $116,000.00 - $174,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
