Department

Emergency Department Physician

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Denver Health and Hospital Authority is recruiting a passionate and talented Emergency Physician to serve as Associate Residency Program Director for the Denver Health/CU Anschutz Residency in Emergency Medicine. The responsibilities of the Associate Program Director will include:

  • Ownership of all elements of PGY-specific requirements, including clinical rotation coordination, resident evaluation and assessment, and mentorship in academic and professional development
  • Partnership with Residency Leadership team to maintain regulatory compliance and advance the program with regards to clinical education, didactic education, faculty development, resident wellbeing, and belonging and inclusion.
  • Residency recruitment, including application review, interview, and selection.
  • Innovation and scholarship in advancing best practices in graduate medical education (GME) both locally and nationally.
  • Serving as a role model within the program for both faculty and residents

Priority will be given to candidates with prior education leadership experience, particularly GME experience.

The Denver Health/CU Anschutz Residency in Emergency Medicine is one of the oldest and most highly regarded Emergency Medicine training programs in the country with a longstanding legacy of training future leaders in our specialty. The residency is a four-year training program with 17 residents in each post-graduate class. Residents are exposed to the breadth of emergency medicine through clinical rotations at four partner institutions, including Denver Health Medical Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital. The residency leadership team consists of four Associate Program Directors, each assigned to one PGY-level class, an Executive Associate Program Director, a Clerkship Director/Assistant Program Director, a Program Manager, Program Coordinator, and Clerkship Coordinator.

Essential Functions:

  • Teaching and Training:
    Instruct students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees. (20%)
  • Deliver Emergency Care to Patients:
    • Stabilize patients in critical condition.
    • Evaluate patients' vital signs & lab data to determine emergency intervention needs and priority of treatment.
    • Conduct primary patient assessments that include information from prior medical care.
    • Analyze records, examination information, or test results to diagnose medical conditions.
    • Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff.
    • Monitor patients' conditions, and reevaluate treatments, as necessary.
    • Select, request, perform, or interpret diagnostic procedures, e.g., lab tests, electrocardiograms, etc..
    • Select and prescribe medications to address patient needs.

  • Develop a Plan of Care for Patients
    • Discuss patients' treatment plans with physicians and other medical professionals.
    • Encourages increased patient understanding and involvement in care.
    • Communicate likely outcomes of medical diseases or traumatic conditions to patients or their representatives.
    • Consult with hospitalists and other professionals, such as social workers, regarding patients' hospital admission, continued observation, transition of care, or discharge.
    • Identify factors that may affect patient management, such as age, gender, barriers to communication, and underlying disease. (30%)
  • Compliance:
    Establish and communicate protocols to meet contractual, regulatory and accreditation requirements. (10%)
  • Staff Management:
    Oversee the activities of staff which includes but is not limited to sourcing, hiring, and training new team members, creating and managing schedules, evaluating performance, and providing coaching to engage and motivate team members, identifying and applying career advancement opportunities for team members, and helping to resolve employee issues and disputes, mentorship and guidance.

  • Doctorate Degree Required

    Licenses:

    • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
    • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
    • Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
