Special Education Teacher Assistant - The Caroline School

Since 2002, The Caroline School has provided unique educational services designed to meet the physical, social, and cognitive needs of individuals ages 18 months to 24 years with multiple disabilities, including those with additional medical needs.

As part of Easter Seals Greater Houston, The Caroline School offers families access to a comprehensive range of services and resources. In addition to educational support, our programs include therapy services, camps, playgroups, respite care, and technology support-helping children, young adults, and their families build skills, increase independence, and thrive within their communities.

We are currently seeking a Special Education Teacher Assistant to join our dedicated team and support students in reaching their educational, developmental, and personal goals. Full-Time, Hourly | Monday–Friday, 7:45 AM–3:30 PM

This is an hourly position that follows the HISD school calendar. The position is scheduled to work on regular school days during the academic year. Employees are not paid for school holidays, scheduled school closures, or other days when school is not in session under the HISD school calendar. Work hours may vary based on meetings, trainings, student needs, and other program requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a Special Education Teacher, a Teacher Assistant provides as-needed instruction and learning support to students with diverse cognitive, physical, and social needs. They also help create a positive learning environment by attending to the following:

• Maintains agreed-upon schedules, classroom equipment, work areas, and student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, cleaning work areas, taking attendance);
• Reviews and completes weekly goal-tracking sheets and charts progress for the appropriate curriculum for each student as advised by their Lead Teacher;
• Adapts and modifies lessons, curriculum, and materials as necessary for each student as instructed by their Lead Teacher;
• Uses assistive technology appropriately for each individual student based on their needs;
• Monitors student safety and assists students with daily living skills and medically necessary accommodations, including tube feeding, tube venting, suctioning, toileting/diaper needs, and feeding;
• Reports on students' education plans as advised and requested by the TCS teaching team;
• Reviews changes and works collaboratively with all relevant team members to support student progress;
• Attends all meetings and actively participates in trainings as specified by the TCS Director;
• Maintains required professional development hours as specified by Childcare Licensing;
• Prepares and presents materials and work samples for review and discussion as requested;
• Communicates with parents daily regarding students' physical, social, and cognitive needs (e.g., pictures, emails, reflection folders, and in-person conversations) in a positive and professional manner;
• Refrains from sensitive or lengthy conversations with parents and refers potential concerns to the supervising teacher and/or TCS Director;
• Attends meetings with parents/guardians as needed and, at a minimum, two times per school year;
• Refrains from engaging in discriminatory practices based on a student's disability, race, sex, cultural background, or religion;
• Follows all confidentiality rules, forms, and compliance standards;
• Abides by all TCS and Easter Seals policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook;
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent;
• Experience supporting children of different ages and abilities, preferably 2+ years;
• Ability to commit to a full-time school-day schedule during the academic year;
• Comfort using or learning to use assistive devices and equipment, including feeding tubes, communication devices, and wheelchairs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Special Education or a Child Development background;
• Bilingual English/Spanish.
