Job purpose
 

The Senior Database Administrator ensures the stability, security, and performance of the organization's Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments. This role owns database administration, high availability and disaster recovery, and performance tuning for systems that power key business applications, and serves as a primary responder for database incidents as part of an on-call rotation. The Senior DBA also supports ETL and reporting through SSIS and SSRS, partners with business stakeholders to turn requirements into technical solutions, and mentors other team members while helping set database standards and best practices.
 

Duties and responsibilities

• Administration & Operations
  • Manage backup, recovery, and high availability/disaster recovery strategies, including Always On Availability Groups, log shipping, and PostgreSQL streaming replication.
  • Handle database security, including access control, permissions, and auditing.
  • Plan and perform patching, upgrades, and capacity planning.
  • Respond to SQL Server and PostgreSQL outages and incidents, including after-hours and weekends, as part of a weekly on-call rotation.
• Performance & Troubleshooting
  • Lead performance tuning efforts using execution plans, indexing and statistics strategy, wait analysis, and query optimization.
  • Use SQL Server tools such as SSMS, Extended Events, Query Store, DMVs, and PerfMon, as well as PostgreSQL tools such as EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, system catalogs, and VACUUM/autovacuum tuning to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis, working backward from known issues to identify and permanently resolve underlying problems.
• Database Development & Design
  • Design, write, and optimize database code across Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, tables, indexes, partitions, and constraints.
  • Review new and existing database code to ensure it meets company standards for readability, reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Build new code and processes to support a growing business and evolving application needs.
• Automation, ETL & Reporting
  • Design, develop, deploy, and monitor SSIS packages and SQL Agent jobs for ETL and operational automation.
  • Create, maintain, and deploy reports in SSRS.
• Business Partnership & Leadership
  • Facilitate requirements sessions with stakeholders and translate business needs and change requests into technical deliverables.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level DBAs and developers and help define database best practices and standards.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in database administration and development in Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments, including installation, configuration, security, backup and recovery, and ongoing support.

• Deep expertise in performance tuning, including query analysis, execution plans, index strategy, statistics maintenance, and blocking, deadlock, and wait analysis.

• Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve database integrity, performance, replication, connectivity, and security issues in production environments.

• Experience with High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions for SQL Server (e.g., Always On Availability Groups, log shipping) and PostgreSQL (e.g., streaming replication, failover).

• Hands-on experience with SSIS package development, deployment, and troubleshooting, and SSRS report design, deployment, and subscription setup.

• Experience automating operational tasks with scripting (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL, Python, or Bash).

• Experience with source control (Git/GitHub) and the full software development lifecycle.Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical documentation and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

• Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize and deliver in a fast-paced environment.

• Collaborative approach, with experience mentoring or guiding other team members. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Relevant certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Database – Specialty, or PostgreSQL certification.Experience with SQL Server 2019 and newer, including migrating or upgrading from older versions.

• Experience with cloud database platforms, such as AWS RDS, Aurora, or SQL Server on EC2.

• Experience with database tooling such as Redgate or Idera, and work tracking tools such as Jira.Familiarity with C# or other application languages for supporting development teams.
