Description
Redfin seeks a general manager to build its new business of selling advertising to property managers, reporting to Redfin’s Chief Product Officer. Redfin already reaches millions of renters across Redfin.com, Rent.com, and ApartmentGuide.com — but we haven’t yet monetized that demand through a modern advertising marketplace. You’ll build that business from scratch - designing the pricing model, the commercial engine, and the systems that make it scale.
Your job is to structure a two-sided marketplace where renters get the listings and guidance they need, and property managers get the qualified demand that fills their buildings. Redfin’s mission is to reinvent real estate in the consumer’s favor, and renters are often the earliest part of that journey. You’ll think big about how technology, pricing, and marketplace design can reshape rental advertising — but property managers are the paying customers, and serving them well is how this business wins.
The Opportunity: Turning National Renter Demand into a Commercial Engine
Roughly 31% of American households rent, and nearly all begin their search online. Redfin already reaches renters on a national scale across its rental brands — demand that would take a new entrant years and significant capital to build. What we don’t yet do is sell advertising directly to the property managers and owners who fill those buildings. That is the opportunity.
The immediate prize is execution: building a marketplace where property managers upload inventory, manage listings, and buy demand that converts. But the bigger prize comes from the decisions you’ll make about what we sell, how we package it, and how we charge for it. You’ll define the pricing model — per‑lease, per‑lead, subscription, performance based, or a model this category hasn’t seen.
With Redfin now powered by Rocket, this business has room to grow fast. This isn't a green-field bet — it's a mandate with a clock on it. Following our recent agreement with the FTC, Redfin has committed to rebuilding and significantly expanding its rental listings business, with real deadlines and executive-level backing to move fast. That means resources, urgency, and a company-wide commitment behind whoever leads this. The demand is already here. You'll turn it into revenue — on a timeline that matters.
An Operator Who Can Think Big
First and foremost, you’ll be a hands-on operator who can make a complex commercial engine hum. You’ll oversee a marketplace serving thousands of property managers, ensuring the right inventory reaches the right renters at the right moment. You’ll build the systems — the Advertiser Portal, Billing System, Sales Team, and inventory acquisition model — that make this business scale.
But you’ll also be a big thinker, someone who makes bold decisions that position Redfin to modernize rental advertising. You’ll decide how property managers onboard, how listings flow across our brands, how we measure performance, and how we price demand. Product and engineering don’t report to you; your influence comes from clarity, evidence, and direction.
Getting these decisions right is what will make this business win
Who You Are
Experienced commercial leader – You have 10–15 years of commercial leadership experience, ideally in marketplaces, advertising, or B2B subscription businesses, with time owning both revenue and margin.
Operator - You’ve rapidly grown revenue in digital businesses that sell demand to SMBs or sales teams. You’ve managed large P&Ls, customer conversations, and frontline insights to make fast, high‑impact decisions.
AI-native - You don’t just use AI; you know it fundamentally changes the way businesses are run. You’ll leverage AI to accelerate pricing, operations, customer acquisition, and decision‑making — and you know where AI changes economics and where it doesn’t.
Big thinker — You aim to make any business you own widely successful. You follow the logic wherever it leads, and you’ve beaten larger incumbents before.
High‑energy, principled team leader — You bring urgency, optimism, and resilience, and you build diverse, high‑trust teams that perform. You hire exceptional people, grow overperformers, and address underperformance quickly — all while operating with transparency and making hard decisions with clarity and fairness.
Great communicator — You listen closely and speak clearly. You adapt your message to your audience, from frontline employees to board members. You seek truth, not consensus.
Helpful but not required: Multifamily, proptech, listing services, lead‑gen economics, partner channels, regulatory experience, or self-serve motions.
A close product partner: Experience shipping through product and engineering teams that do not report to the role, and delivering against a fixed external date with real consequences for missing it.
