Responsibilities
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Project Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable execution of heavy civil construction work in the field. The Superintendent leads crews and subcontractors, plans and coordinates upcoming operations, manages manpower and equipment, monitors production, and works closely with the Project Manager and Project Engineer to complete the project safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES:Safety• Take primary field responsibility for jobsite safety and ensure work is performed in accordance with company, project, OSHA, and owner safety requirements.• Lead and reinforce daily safety planning, including Activity Hazard Analyses, Toolbox Talks, Daily Safety Huddles, utility locate requirements, and task-specific safety procedures.• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite and ensure crews and subcontractors comply with required safety protocols.• Immediately communicate incidents, damages, near misses, and significant safety concerns to project leadership.Field Operations & Production• Lead and supervise field crews and subcontractors to execute work safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plans, specifications, and project requirements.• Establish daily production goals and communicate expectations to Foremen and field personnel.• Monitor actual production against planned and budgeted production rates and make adjustments to manpower, equipment, sequencing, or means and methods as necessary.• Review upcoming operations in advance and ensure labor, equipment, materials, survey/layout, subcontractors, and access are coordinated before work begins.• Coordinate survey and layout requirements and verify field work is constructed in accordance with project plans and contract requirements.• Monitor equipment utilization and manpower to ensure resources are being used efficiently.• Coach and develop Foremen and field personnel while establishing clear accountability for safety, quality, production, and execution.Planning & Scheduling• Develop and maintain rolling two- to four-week look-ahead schedules in coordination with the Project Manager and Project Engineer.• Plan upcoming operations by reviewing project plans, specifications, schedule, estimate, budget, and field conditions.• Coordinate daily and upcoming labor and equipment requirements with project leadership and company operations.• Determine material needs in advance, complete or verify takeoffs as needed, and coordinate timely procurement and delivery.• Coordinate subcontractor activities, utility requirements, inspections, and other project dependencies to maintain the project schedule.• Identify potential conflicts, constructability issues, schedule impacts, and resource constraints early and communicate them to project leadership.Cost, Quality & Project Controls• Review the project estimate and cost reports to understand budgeted labor, equipment, materials, and production expectations for upcoming operations.• Accurately track and communicate daily quantities, manpower, equipment, production, and significant field conditions.• Work with the Project Manager and Project Engineer to identify cost impacts, extra work, changed conditions, and potential overruns or underruns.• Ensure work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, quality requirements, and applicable inspection/testing requirements.• Review and verify daily time sheets, equipment logs, and field documentation for accuracy and timely submission.Coordination & Leadership• Meet regularly with the Project Manager and Project Engineer to coordinate upcoming work, resources, subcontractors, materials, and project priorities.• Participate in project planning and progress meetings as required and provide clear, accurate updates regarding field status and upcoming needs.• Maintain professional working relationships with owners, inspectors, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and field personnel while protecting the company's contractual and operational interests.• Escalate significant field conflicts, delays, design issues, safety concerns, or cost impacts to project leadership in a timely manner.• Support estimating and preconstruction efforts by providing field input, production knowledge, and constructability feedback when requested.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:• 3+ years of heavy civil field construction experience with demonstrated progression in field leadership on projects valued at $5M+.• B.S. Degree in Civil, Environmental, Construction Management Engineering preferred.• Previous experience as a Foreman, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent preferred. Candidates with strong field leadership experience and the ability to develop into a Project Superintendent role will be considered.• Experience with heavy civil construction such as roadway, site work, underground utilities, excavation, structures/piles, environmental work, or water/wastewater infrastructure preferred.• FDOT or other DOT/public infrastructure experience is preferred but not required.• Demonstrated ability to plan work, lead crews, coordinate subcontractors, manage resources, and understand construction production and cost drivers.• Strong communication, organization, follow-through, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced field environment.• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, schedules, and project cost/production information.
