Description of Work

The Correctional Housing Unit II position is located at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury NC, which houses approximately 477 medium or close custody male offenders. This position provides direct support to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager III and assumes responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit in the absence of the Correctional
Housing Unit Manager III. This position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Sergeants.

This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Assuming responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit in the absence of the CHUM III.
2. Providing leadership and guidance to subordinate staff and ensures staff are alert, properly trained, informed and prepared to
perform their job responsibilities under a variety of conditions.
3. Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures and ensuring rules and
regulations are followed according to policy.
4. Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards
relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
5. Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
6. Responding to emergency situations such as: distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
7. Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
8. Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
9. Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
10. Serving on a variety of institutional committees as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: $39,244 - $68,679

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

To be considered for a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II position, ALL applicants must:

  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Required Adverse Weather Reporting:

This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Note to Current State Employees:

The salary grade for this position is NC08.  State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.

About the Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
