REPORTS TO: Youth Hockey Manager
POSTING DATE: October 8, 2026
PAY RANGE: The pay rate for this position is $20.00 per hour.
Actual base pay will be determined based on permissible factors such as transferable skills, relevant work experience, market demands, and primary work location. The pay rate provided is subject to change and may be modified in the future in accordance with applicable law.
Position Overview
Sharks Sports and Entertainment (SSE) is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Hockey Coach to join our Sharks Ice team in San Jose.
In this role, you will help players develop their hockey skills, build confidence, and foster a lifelong appreciation for the game. You will support engaging, age-appropriate instruction in a positive and inclusive environment where players of varying skill levels feel encouraged to learn, improve, and have fun.
The ideal candidate is passionate about hockey, enjoys working with players of different ages and abilities, and is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and rewarding experience for our participants and their families.
This is a part-time position with a variable schedule based on programming and business needs, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with planning, organizing, and leading hockey practices, drills, and instructional activities for youth recreational hockey programs.

Teach fundamental hockey skills using age-appropriate techniques and established USA Hockey guidelines.

Create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that encourages participation, teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development.

Adapt instruction and activities to accommodate varying skill levels and learning needs.

Maintain active supervision of participants during assigned instructional activities and promote compliance with established safety guidelines.
-
Collaborate with fellow coaches, volunteer coaches, and program staff to support organized and effective practices.

Assist with preparing, setting up, and properly storing instructional equipment and training materials.
-
Communicate professionally and respectfully with participants, parents, guardians, and team members regarding program activities and player development.

Support a positive customer experience by responding to questions and directing participants and families to appropriate resources.

Share information about Sharks Ice programs, camps, clinics, and other available hockey development opportunities.

Maintain familiarity with applicable hockey rules, instructional practices, and safety procedures.

Follow SSE policies, facility rules, and established emergency response and incident reporting procedures.

Participate in required training, meetings, and professional development activities.

Perform other related duties consistent with the position, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Knowledge of ice hockey fundamentals, rules, and basic coaching techniques.

Ability to demonstrate and teach foundational hockey skills safely and effectively.
-
Ability to skate proficiently and provide instruction in an on-ice environment.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage positively with participants, families, and colleagues.
-
Ability to provide clear instructions, constructive feedback, and encouragement to players with varying levels of experience.

Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches, volunteers, and program staff.

Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.

Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Ability to complete required training, certifications, and background screening, as applicable to the position and in accordance with applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Previous experience coaching, teaching, or participating in organized ice hockey.

Experience working with youth in a recreational, educational, or athletic setting.

Familiarity with USA Hockey coaching standards and age-appropriate player development practices.
Physical Requirements

Ability to skate and provide on-ice instruction for varying periods throughout assigned shifts.

Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate hockey skills during instructional activities.

Ability to work in a cold, temperature-controlled ice rink environment for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to bend, reach, and handle hockey equipment and instructional materials as needed.

Ability to move or lift equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to communicate effectively with participants and colleagues in an active recreational environment.

Ability to work in an environment with noise and activity associated with hockey programming.

Ability to respond appropriately to safety concerns and follow established emergency procedures.

May be required to work at other Sharks Ice locations based on business needs.
