This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s Corporate Office locations in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Discovery Land Company is seeking a full-time, year-round Payroll Specialist to join the Finance and Accounting Department.
Job Summary:
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for supporting the accurate and timely processing of multi-state payroll operations while serving as the primary backup to the Payroll Manager. This role partners closely with Human Resources, Finance, and employees to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Workday Payroll, OneSource Virtual (OSV) services, payroll tax compliance, and payroll implementations associated with new company and tax jurisdiction setup. This position requires excellent attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Payroll Processing & Administration
Support bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and off-cycle payroll processing activities.
Review payroll data for accuracy and completeness before payroll submission.
Audit earnings, deductions, taxes, garnishments, and benefit deductions.
Prepare and reconcile payroll reports and payroll-related general ledger accounts.
Research and resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries in a timely manner.
Ensure compliance with company policies, payroll procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Workday Payroll Administration
Maintain payroll-related data within Workday.
Review and audit employee data changes affecting payroll, including new hires, terminations, transfers, and compensation adjustments.
Support Workday payroll testing, system enhancements, upgrades, and process improvements.
Partner with Human Resources, Finance, and IT teams to ensure payroll data accuracy and integrity.
Assist with payroll-related system troubleshooting and issue resolution.
OneSource Virtual (OSV) Administration
Serve as a primary liaison with OneSource Virtual (OSV) to resolve payroll processing and tax-related issues.
Monitor and manage payroll service tickets, ensuring timely resolution.
Coordinate payroll tax filings and year-end payroll activities through OSV.
Support payroll audits and compliance reviews involving OSV services.
Payroll Tax Compliance & New Company Setup
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
Research, analyze, and resolve payroll tax notices and tax-related issues.
Coordinate state unemployment insurance account setup and maintenance.
Manage payroll tax registrations for new entities, acquisitions, and business locations.
Support new company setup activities within Workday and related payroll systems.
Ensure proper tax jurisdiction setup and compliance for new locations and business entities.
Reporting, Reconciliation & Compliance
Generate, analyze, and distribute payroll reports and metrics.
Prepare payroll-related account reconciliations and support month-end close activities.
Assist with internal and external audits, including payroll, tax, and SOX compliance audits.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
Maintain strict confidentiality of employee payroll and personal information.
Support annual payroll activities, including W-2 processing, tax reconciliations, and year-end reporting.
Payroll Manager Backup
Serve as the designated backup for all Payroll Manager responsibilities.
Lead payroll processing and approval activities during the Payroll Manager's absence.
Assist with payroll projects, acquisitions, entity changes, and process improvement initiatives.
Provide payroll guidance and support to Human Resources, Finance, and management teams.
Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of payroll experience in a multi-state environment.
Hands-on experience processing payroll in Workday Payroll.
Experience working with OneSource Virtual (OSV) payroll services.
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
Experience with payroll tax account registrations and new company/entity setup.
Experience processing payroll for multiple entities and jurisdictions.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including payroll reporting and data analysis.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
Experience in a multi-entity, high-growth organization.

Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Long hours may be required due to business demands.

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than eight (8) hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than fifty (50) pounds.
