Job Description
RBC is a digitally-enabled relationship bank. We strive to engage our customers when, how and where it’s most convenient and to provide a highly personalized experience. We also collaborate broadly with innovative business and technology partners to create a platform and ecosystem that can bring even more value to our customers. We care deeply about the success of our customers and communities.
We are looking for a self-motivated, passionate individual who wants to shape the future of digital client acquisition at enterprise scale. You will lead architecture on multiple initiatives across the Digital Payments Rails. You will set technical direction that others follow, and turn ambitious ideas into clear, executable blueprints. You thrive in complexity, challenge legacy assumptions, and raise the bar for simplicity, resilience, and user experience. In this role, you will partner across business and engineering domains to deliver modern, scalable solutions that create measurable client and platform value.
You will influence architecture across multiple product and technology teams, balancing near-term delivery with long-term platform health. Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with RBC's Code of Conduct, Values, Guiding Principles and Privacy standards.
What will you do?
Shape the future of digital client acquisition at RBC by owning end-to-end architecture for key Digital Payments initiatives, from problem framing and option analysis through solution design and implementation guidance.
Lead architecture decisions for digital payments self-serve rails, including integration patterns, domain boundaries, API/event contracts, and non-functional requirements.
Partner closely with Product, Development, Security, Risk, and Operations to align business outcomes with pragmatic technical execution.
Provide architectural leadership in modern distributed systems: micro-services, event-driven design, cloud-native delivery, and API-first development.
Mentor and guide technical leads, helping drive a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement across the team.
Guide teams in building observable, operable, and resilient services, including performance, availability, security, and recovery considerations.
Identify reuse opportunities, reduce duplication, and evolve current-state architectures toward target-state capabilities through clear roadmaps.
Use hands-on prototyping and technical spikes to de-risk design choices where appropriate.
In this role, you will communicate and interact frequently with RBC partners and/or employees located across Canada and/or worldwide.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
Deep experience in distributed system design, including event-driven architecture, API-first integration, and cloud-based deployments.
Strong practical understanding of modern application platforms (web and/or mobile-backed services) and full lifecycle delivery.
Demonstrated ability to make and communicate difficult technical trade-offs with clarity to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Proven ability to drive technical outcomes across multiple concurrent initiatives while keeping work aligned and priorities clear.
Strong influence skills with a proven ability to build alignment across Architecture, Development, Product, and Business teams without formal authority.
Excellent written and verbal communication, including architecture diagrams, decision records, and presentations.
Hands-on technical depth (e.g., Java/Spring Boot, modern integration patterns, CI/CD, observability) to credibly guide implementation teams.
Nice-to-have
Familiarity with RBC's solution design methodology and governance processes.
Experience in banking or other highly regulated domains, including privacy, risk, and compliance considerations.
Experience shaping target architectures across multiple teams and managing architectural runway for multi-quarter roadmaps.
Integration experience with third-party SaaS partners and external platforms.
Experience with cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, and/or Azure).
Strong DevOps/SRE mindset and experience with operational excellence patterns.
Experience using AI-enabled engineering tools to improve architecture and delivery outcomes.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
What’s in it for you?
Work on high-visibility initiatives that materially shape how millions of Canadians start and deepen relationships with RBC.
Influence architecture decisions that span products, channels, and technology domains.
Join a strong peer group of architects and senior engineers committed to modern engineering and continuous improvement.
A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including flexible benefits, competitive compensation, bonuses, and stock where applicable.
Leaders who support your growth through coaching, stretch opportunities, and enterprise exposure.
Opportunities to take on progressively broader architecture leadership across RBC.
