Description
The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for a Plant/Pump Maintenance Mechanic.
All vacancies for this position may be used to hire for any of the following locations: a central location in Everett, WA; the City of Everett Water Treatment Plant in Sultan, WA; and the City of Everett Water Pollution Control Facilities in Everett, WA.
This is work involving the inspection, operation, preventive maintenance, and minor repair of equipment and facilities relating to a municipal water distribution system and wastewater collection system and/or municipal water and wastewater treatment systems.
The work involves responsibility for inspecting equipment and facilities daily to ensure that all mechanical and electrical equipment is operating safely and efficiently. Successful performance of the work requires application of knowledge of the water distribution system and the wastewater collection system and/or municipal water, and wastewater treatment systems gained through experience and training. Preventive maintenance work is performed according to an established schedule; special assignments may occur as a result of daily inspections and/or instructions from the supervisor. The work may be assigned throughout the utility. The work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for correctness usually by a Utility Maintenance Technician or supervisor. The work of this classification ensures the periodic inspection and efficient operations of equipment and facilities.
The work will additionally assist other staff members such as Utility Maintenance Technicians or others with maintenance related work, such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical and general laborer work.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
· Requires high school graduation or equivalent AND 1-2 years of experience in utilities or related construction or mechanical experience. OR completion of a general mechanical vocational technical program.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS
· Possession of a Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) 1 certification or ability to obtain a QEW 1 within 6 months of hire, additionally it is expected that a Qualified Electrical Worker 2 level be obtained within the first year of this position, a QEW 2 is approximately 50 or more hours of verifiable work experience performing electrical installation or maintenance on commercial or industrial systems.
· Possession of a valid driver license at the date of hire, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hire.
· Possession and maintenance of a Washington State Electrician’s card is highly desirable.
· Depending on area of assignment, certification as a Washington State Level I Water Treatment Plant Operator or a Washington State Group I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is highly desirable.
· Depending on area of assignment, possess and maintain City sponsored certifications such as forklift, elevated platforms, and crane operator certification in accordance with Washington Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) rules.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
· Must be able to perform outdoor work for prolonged periods under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather.
· Must be able to perform work requiring sustained lifting, bending, climbing, standing, and walking; to lift and carry 50 pounds and occasionally move heavier objects.
· Must be able to climb ladders and stairs up to 100 feet, climb into and work in confined spaces, and perform heavy manual labor under dirty and uncomfortable conditions. Ability to access and work in variable works sites that may require limited accessibility.
· Must be able to respond to emergency call-outs, to work staggered shifts and to perform work on weekends and holidays as required.

EXAMINATION STEPS
· There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
· Responses to the supplemental questionnaire and a redacted version of the application or resume will be reviewed together to generate a single combined score, which will be blind-rated and weighted at 10%.
· Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview/practical (weighted 90%) The in-person practical/oral board will be tentatively scheduled for early November.
· All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
· A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
· The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
· Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other United States department of defense discharge document DD form 214, NGB form 22, or their equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
· Extensive background checks will be conducted.
· Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a city-paid pre-employment physical.
· New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
