Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Binding Authority Underwriter to join a growing underwriting team focused on delivering profitable business through strong broker relationships, disciplined underwriting, and strategic portfolio management.

This role is ideal for an underwriting professional who enjoys balancing technical risk evaluation with business development. The successful candidate will manage new business, renewals, and endorsements while partnering closely with brokers to identify opportunities, negotiate terms, and drive sustainable growth.

As a Binding Authority Underwriter, you will play a key role in evaluating risks, making informed underwriting decisions, and developing a profitable book of business. You'll have the opportunity to collaborate across teams, engage directly with brokers, and contribute to market-facing initiatives that support long-term success.

What will your job entail?

  • Underwrite and price new business, renewals, and endorsements within delegated binding authority.

  • Evaluate submissions and exposures to determine appropriate pricing, coverage terms, and underwriting strategy.

  • Select and verify classification codes, rating exposures, and premium calculations.

  • Apply underwriting judgment to determine credits, debits, and pricing adjustments that support profitable business outcomes.

  • Determine appropriate coverage forms, endorsements, and policy structure based on risk characteristics.

  • Clearly communicate quote terms, conditions, and underwriting requirements to brokers.

  • Maintain thorough and accurate underwriting documentation and decision rationale within company systems.

  • Coordinate timely policy issuance and endorsement processing.

  • Order and review inspection reports to validate exposures and assess risk quality.

  • Manage broker, customer, and agency relationships to support retention and new business growth.

  • Monitor production pipelines and identify opportunities to expand the portfolio.

  • Participate in stewardship meetings, broker visits, marketing initiatives, and industry events.

  • Collaborate with underwriting colleagues and cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive solutions for complex risks.

  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with company guidelines, authority levels, regulatory requirements, and portfolio objectives.

What Success Looks Like

  • Building and maintaining a profitable book of business.

  • Delivering sound underwriting decisions that balance growth and profitability.

  • Developing strong relationships with brokers and business partners.

  • Consistently meeting service standards for quoting, renewals, and policy processing.

  • Effectively managing production goals and growth opportunities.

  • Maintaining accurate underwriting documentation and regulatory compliance.

  • Identifying and pursuing quality new business opportunities while retaining desirable accounts.

Training & Development

This role offers ongoing opportunities to deepen underwriting expertise, expand market knowledge, and strengthen broker relationships. Underwriters gain exposure to a variety of risks and work collaboratively with experienced professionals who support technical development and portfolio growth.

The position also provides visibility across underwriting, distribution, and business leadership functions, creating opportunities for continued career progression within the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related discipline; equivalent professional experience may be considered.

  • Minimum of 5 years of Binding Authority underwriting experience.

  • Experience underwriting new business, renewals, and endorsements.

  • Strong understanding of commercial insurance products, policy forms, coverage analysis, and underwriting principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate risk exposures and make sound underwriting decisions.

  • Experience managing broker relationships and negotiating coverage terms and pricing.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced underwriting environment.

  • State P&C and/or surplus lines licensing requirements as applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field.

  • CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) designation.

  • CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) designation.

  • Experience managing a profitable underwriting portfolio within delegated authority.

  • Existing broker relationships and market-facing experience.

  • Experience participating in business development, marketing, and stewardship activities.

Why Join Us?

  • Opportunity to own and grow a profitable underwriting portfolio.

  • Strong balance of technical underwriting and broker-facing responsibilities.

  • Exposure to a diverse range of risks and coverage solutions.

  • Opportunity to participate in business development and market-facing initiatives.

  • Collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and professional growth.
