GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Student Respiratory Therapist, under the direct and immediate supervision of a licensed and Registered Respiratory Therapist, will assist in providing respiratory care services within the scope of their education, demonstrated competency and hospital policy. Direct and immediate supervision requires that the supervising RCP remain continuously on site and present in the department or facility where the student is providing care, be immediately available to assist the student with care being performed and maintain responsibility of care provided by the student. The Student Respiratory Therapist will not independently perform respiratory care services or assume responsibility for patient care outside the student’s authorized scope, demonstrated competency, hospital policy, or level of education.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Assist with routine respiratory care procedures appropriate to the student’s current level of education and demonstrated competency. 
2.    Perform patient assessments and collect pertinent respiratory and clinical information to evaluate the appropriateness of making any necessary modifications and adjustments of care plan and equipment use, as directed and supervised by a licensed respiratory therapist. 
3.    Perform basic respiratory therapy procedures under direct supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist in accordance with evidence-based guidelines and departmental and hospital policies and procedures. 
a.    Procedures include but are not limited to oxygen, aerosol therapy with and without medication, incentive spirometry, suctioning, chest physiotherapy and EKGs.
4.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
5.    Assist with patient monitoring, including oxygen saturation and other appropriate respiratory parameters. 
6.    Assist with obtaining and processing respiratory specimens as permitted by education, competency, and hospital policy. 
7.    Assist with blood gas specimen collection and/or other diagnostic procedures. 
8.    Assist with respiratory equipment preparation, cleaning, troubleshooting, and maintenance. 
9.    Assist the RCP with patient transport and respiratory care needs associated with transport. 
10.    Assist the RCP with the set up and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, noninvasive ventilators and associated critical care duties.
11.    Accurately document care provided in accordance with hospital policy. 
12.    Communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other members of the health care team. 
13.    Participate in emergency response activities within the students’ level of training and competency under the direction of an RCP. 
14.    Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and hospital policies. 
15.    Participate in department education, competency validation, quality improvement activities, and other departmental activities as assigned. 
16.    Complete and maintain yearly unit specific competencies and all annual hospital wide mandatory training within defined time frame.
17.    Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the students’ education, demonstrated competency, and position responsibilities. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Enrollment in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current participation in respiratory classes and clinical rotations and have completed one (1) year of the program.
2.    Knowledge of basic respiratory therapy procedures and documented competency validation upon hire. 
3.    Ability to use a computer for documentation and other relevant activities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Previous patient care experience in a medical environment. 
2.    Multilingual.
