Position Summary:
The Payroll and Benefits Specialist is responsible for supporting Human Resources (HR) in the areas of payroll, benefits, leave management, employee wellness, HR information management, HR reporting and metrics and other duties as directed by the Director of People and Culture.
This role requires strong judgment, relationship building, communication, and prioritization skills as well as adaptability, initiative, self-awareness, resiliency, reliability, integrity, a high level of accuracy, and exceptional attention to detail.
Location: 622 Selby Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55104
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday between 8am - 5pm. May work remotely up to one day per week.
Qualifications:
- Computer Skills: Intermediate understanding of Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Detail Oriented: Demonstrated attention to detail; ability to identify errors and make corrections; success working with numbers and large volumes of numeric data to produce highly accurate outcomes
- Decision Making: Demonstrated record of sound judgement, integrity, ethics, and decision-making, considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate
- Customer Service: Demonstrated record of excellent service and interpersonal skills, approachable, courteous, respectful; handles all situations with professionalism and confidentiality; ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff and vendors
- Communication: Excellent verbal, nonverbal, and written communication, clear, concise, and accurate to convey complex information related to payroll and benefits; ability to provide coaching and consultation
- Prioritization: Demonstrated track record of effective prioritization, multi-tasking, organizational skills, and follow-through
- Problem Solving: Ability to identifying complex problems and review information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions that enhance payroll and benefits systems while maintaining compliance with requirements
- Flexibility and Adaptability: Proven ability to be flexible and adaptable, able to adjust plans and priorities as needed to accommodate changes and meet deadlines
- Math Skills: Demonstrated analytical ability and proficiency in math; ability to timely and accurately perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Culturally Competent: Cultural competency and the commitment to work with diverse populations and other stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Payroll and Benefits: Prior experience in administration of payroll and/or benefits
- Microsoft Excel: Ability to create pivot tables, formulas, and other intermediate or advanced features
- Software Skills: Proficient with cloud based HRIS and payroll systems; Paylocity experience preferred
- Multilingual

Physical and Working Requirements:
The position involves frequent stationary tasks, along with regular movement throughout the offices, sales floor, stock areas, kitchen, and classrooms. Occasional positioning is required to access both low and high shelving, equipment, and products. The job also entails the occasional movement of containers weighing up to 30 lbs. The Payroll and Benefits Specialist may utilize various equipment including but not limited to computers and printers. This role requires exchanging accurate information in person, over the phone, and through email and other written communication. Additionally, the Payroll and Benefits Specialist may be designated as staff to be contacted in emergency situations, must have the ability to travel between locations, and must meet the Rivers Cooperative Markets' safe driver requirements.
