Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. During your onsite days you will work at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building located at 201 W Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80202. Office hours are 8:00AM – 5:00PM.

The Denver City Attorney’s Office is one of the largest law firms in Colorado, with over 230 attorneys and staff members comprised of paralegals, victim advocates, and other support and supervisory staff members. Clients include the Mayor, City Council, all other elected and appointed officials, all city agencies, departments, boards, commissions, and employees.

The Denver City Attorney’s Office is seeking a Paralegal I for the Employment & Labor Law Section. The Paralegal I perform entry-level paraprofessional legal work assisting attorneys with a full range of legal support work such as drafting various legal documents, calendaring deadlines, preparing trial/hearing exhibit notebooks, collecting and organizing relevant information and documents, research, analysis, and other standard level paralegal assistance. The Employment & Labor Law Section is seeking an individual with experience in civil litigation in state and federal court as well as appeals. The ideal candidate will have experience in providing attorney support through all phases of the litigation process, including trial and post-trial.

The Employment & Labor Law Section represents the City and County of Denver, the third largest employer in the State of Colorado, in all employment matters. The Employment & Labor Law Section handles a variety of employment law matters, including advisory work, training, and defending Denver in administrative appeals, Workers’ Compensation claims, EEOC/CCRD charges of discrimination and state and federal court lawsuits alleging constitutional/civil rights claims and violations of Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, CADA, etc. The attorneys regularly appear in all federal and state courts. This job is a perfect fit for an experienced paralegal that is highly skilled, highly organized, detail oriented, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and a self-starter. This position offers the opportunity for meaningful and interesting legal work in a dynamic environment with good work-life balance and regular hours.


Job responsibilities include:

  • Reviews, analyzes, and identifies various documentation by conducting legal and factual research into various cases and/or matters. Prepares and provides materials, documentation, and reports on the research results
  • Maintain litigation calendars in compliance with civil court and judge specific rules and procedures, noting deadline dates for responsive pleadings/motions, court appearances, and other important dates. Remind attorneys about upcoming deadlines in advance
  • Assists with the preparation of basic pleadings such as motions, summons, subpoenas, exhibits, resolutions and responses to discovery. Files documents in the proper filing system
  • Prepares other legal documents and correspondence as requested or required and responds to client inquiries/communications in a timely manner
  • Provides litigation support to attorneys in various cases and/or matters such as depositions, trials and hearings
  • Assembles and prepares documentation and/or exhibits based on materials developed during investigatory and discovery stages
  • Collects, compiles, organizes, and analyzes various data for use in reports and documentation using Bates-stamping, redaction, de-duplication, indexing, and the creation of privilege logs
  • Assists other Paralegals, at higher levels, with the preparation of witness binders for deposition and trial. Prepares exhibits for hearings including assembling and preparing trial notebooks and/or exhibits
  • Assists with depositions and trials by preparing necessary documentation to commence, continue, or terminate proceedings as instructed
  • Provides support functions for documentation control, coordinating exhibits and witnesses during trials and hearings, and provides immediate research and documentation retrieval when called upon. Arranges for documentation reproduction and maintains records of the related job functions.
  • Assists attorneys with interviewing clients, gathering, analyzing, and researching data such as statutes, decisions, legal articles, codes and regulations
  • Assists with minimal investigation of facts to determine causes of action and assists in case preparation
  • Assists in setting up case files, prepares requests and obtains necessary documentation.
  • Organizes and indexes case/matter documentation making it available and easily accessible to attorneys
  • Checks legal citations by proofreading for substance and format including conformance with approved standards
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a City-wide emergency declared by the Mayor.
  • Any one position may not include all of the duties listed. However, the allocation of positions will be determined by the amount of time spent in performing the essential duties listed above

 

 

What You’ll Bring

The preferred candidate  will  possess the following qualifications :


  • At least two (2) years of experience with employment law and/or civil litigation in both state and federal court, including handling  all aspects of a case through trial and on appeal
  • Knowledge of electronic court filing procedures and rules for state and federal courts, including appellate courts
  • Experience with trial preparation and in trial support  in both state and federal courts
  • Employment Law experience
  • Drafts, issues and monitors litigation holds. Performs keyword and other searches on electronic discovery, perform first pass reviews for documents that are potentially relevant or subject to privilege.
  • Experience with and demonstrated proficiency with the following: MS-Office  365, Adobe-Pro, Westlaw or LexisNexis, E -discovery software
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, attorneys and other staff members
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work well under pressure
  • A self-starter and team player
  • A paralegal certification is preferred

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of full-time paralegal equivalent experience in a public or private law office, not including internships.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
