Job Title: Visitor Operations Associate

Location: Ohio History Center & Ohio Village, Columbus, OH

Status: Part time, intermittent

Compensation: $20.00/hr

 

Position Summary:

Assists in the performance of a variety of operational duties including greeting customers, orienting visitors to exhibit spaces, opening and closing exhibit spaces, directing event setups and teardowns, selling merchandise, food, admission and memberships, providing institutional telephone coverage and taking reservations. Works on an intermittent, as-needed basis with no guarantee of hours or ongoing assignments.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides a superior service during every interaction through reflective and active listening, addressing the customers' needs, providing information and assistance, and presenting a professional image for the Ohio History Connection.
  • Create a positive and fun environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable and engaging, encouraging participation by directing visitors to activities and programs that promote curiosity and relevance.
  • Clearly demonstrates knowledge of all Ohio History Connection activities and products including admission policies, onsite wayfinding, and information about exhibitions, events, public programs, and membership benefits; communicates this knowledge clearly to visitors, as well as to event rental clients and guests.
  • Responsible for researching and resolving non-complex complaints to ensure customer retention and satisfaction.
  • Assist with school group orientations, logistics and programs
  • Help maintain and care for museum interactives and displays; start up museum interactives in the mornings.
  • Coordinate volunteers' pre-assigned daily tasks and act as point of contact for day-of questions and needs.
  • Assist with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety of visitors, colleagues, and the site.

 

Scheduling and Hours:

  • This position is intermittent and event-based. Hours are scheduled based on operational needs and will vary. There is no guarantee of minimum hours or frequency of assignments.
  • In order to remain in good standing in the intermittent staff pool, you must work a minimum of one shift every six months.
  • Required training is paid and may occur prior to event assignments.

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent plus one to three years of customer service and/or sales experience.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 6+ months of combined experience working with the general public (ex. retail, reception, front desk work, food service, etc.)
  • Experience interacting with school-aged children.

 

Required Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to colleagues and the general public, both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to research and retain information;
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office suite; email proficiency required; some knowledge of routine clerical work required
  • Ability to carry out assigned duties with a minimum of supervision; ability pay attention to detail and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; skilled at working with a variety of professions and personalities
  • Intuitive and proactive in meeting the needs of visitors and fellow staff; ability to organize and orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously.
