Description
Worker Type:
PermanentHere at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
We have an exciting opportunity for a strategic and people-focused Platform Manager to join the AI team and lead the platforms that automate and modernise how BNZ works.
Leading a team of experienced technology professionals, you'll drive platform strategy, delivery, engineering excellence, operational efficiency and future capability development. You'll bring platform or product leadership experience, strong software delivery fundamentals, and a user-centred view of how automation, workflow and AI can deliver real value at enterprise scale.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with our Head of Technology – Artificial Intelligence and they told us the following about the role:
What are some day-to-day tasks the successful candidate in this role will complete?
- Platform Strategy: Develop and communicate a compelling platform strategy that meets stakeholders' requirements, aligns with BNZ's goals, and drives impactful outcomes. Guide technology teams toward purpose-driven excellence.
- People Leadership: Lead Platform Owners, Engineering Leads and Delivery Managers through all employee lifecycle stages – attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals. The Platform Manager role is an influential Technology Domain leadership position.
- Roadmap Planning: Create and maintain a comprehensive platform roadmap, prioritising features and enhancements to meet agreed business objectives for customers and colleagues.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with technology teams, architects, vendors, and enterprise stakeholders to design, build, and maintain seamless platforms that integrate with other systems. Bring enough software engineering and SDLC grounding — including APIs, integration, cloud, CI/CD and production delivery — to make informed platform decisions across low-code and high-code environments.
- AI & Automation: Shape how AI and automation capability is brought into these platforms in a deliberate, safe and genuinely useful way — embedded into how work actually gets done, not bolted on.
- Data-Driven Decisions: Utilise data and analytics to make informed decisions, driving platform improvements and optimisation. Support technology teams in making data-backed choices.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
This is a fast-paced opportunity with real momentum behind it. There's strong organisational support and genuine breadth — you'll lead the development, operation and optimisation of platforms that a large part of the bank depends on, and see your strategy turn into things colleagues and customers actually use.
It also sits inside BNZ's AI team, where workflow, automation and AI are converging fast. You'll be part of a phenomenal team, with exposure to diverse use cases across the bank, helping decide what modern automation looks like in a regulated environment.
What skills are required for this role?
- Product Management Experience: Background as a Software Product Owner, Product Manager or Platform Owner, ideally with platform products — engineering, workflow, integration or automation platforms are all great grounding.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without authority in an agile, fast-paced environment.
- Strategic Vision: Ability to define and align the platform vision with business goals.
- Technical Understanding: Solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals and SDLC practices — APIs, integration, cloud platforms, CI/CD and production deployments — and how low-code and automation platforms sit alongside high-code engineering.
- AI Literacy: A working understanding of modern AI concepts and where they genuinely add value in workflow and automation contexts.
- Delivery Focus: Comfortable as a hands-on leader, working directly with engineers, BAs and business SMEs rather than managing at arm's length.
- Stakeholder Management: Expertise in managing expectations of enterprise senior leaders and key stakeholders, fostering collaboration and maturing ways of working with aligned business units.
What will success look like for the candidate in this role?
Success in this role will be demonstrated by effectively leading the platform teams towards operational excellence, ensuring alignment with customer needs, stakeholder expectations, and BNZ's strategic goals. Platforms will be stable, secure, current and compliant, roadmaps will translate into delivered outcomes, and AI and automation capability will be measurably improving how work gets done for users. The candidate will also be successful in promoting a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability across their teams.
