The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks energetic maintenance workers to assist a team in the maintenance of storm sewer systems within Fairfax County.

Fairfax County’s award-winning Stormwater team works to reduce flood risk and protect local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay with comprehensive watershed and infrastructure management to protect people, the environment, and property.
Under the general supervision of the senior maintenance supervisor or team lead, the maintenance worker performs a variety of semi-skilled duties required in the operations of stormwater management. Performs concrete, asphalt and basic storm sewer construction and maintenance work. Operates a variety of small engine equipment and engages in manual labor. Maintains compliance with the approved performance standards for this position. This position description is not intended to be all inclusive.
This position may be transferred within the same branch or between divisions to meet the ongoing business needs of the organization.
Location: This position works in the DPWES Stormwater Maintenance Operations Branch located at 10635 West Drive Fairfax, VA. 22030.
Hours: This position is a non-merit, part-time, hourly position with no benefits. This position allows you to work up to 900 hours in a calendar year (October – April), 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 6:30am-3pm.
Salary: $20.22 per hour.
Note: Stormwater Management positions are responsible for responding to and assisting with snow, flood and other designated weather emergencies on an as needed basis. Therefore, this position is designated as emergency service personnel and may be required at any time to be on a 24/7 status by the DPWES Director or Division Director to report to work when the County Executive declares unscheduled leave or emergency administrative leave per county policy. In addition, this position may be required to work mandatory overtime to respond to emergencies related to the health, welfare or safety of either the public or employees. You must make every reasonable effort to be accessible for communication.
In early 2027, all West Drive assignments will be permanently located at the new Water Resources and Infrastructure building, located at 6000 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015. Position may require traveling to multiple Fairfax County sites.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of stormwater and snow removal experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs. Effectively communicate both oral and in writing. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps. Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by people who weigh 310lbs. or more. Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, noisy environments, etc. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crawl, lift, as well as work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time to manipulate materials with manual dexterity, use of hoses, and operate units up to 12 feet tall to set up and perform maintenance. The ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
