JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a motivated and analytical summer student from UBC’s Faculty of Applied Science to support a targeted water conservation initiative. This role will focus on identifying high water users across campus and developing a practical education program to reduce water consumption.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Reports to the Utilities Manager and works closely with the EWS Utilities team, the student worker will contribute to UBC’s goals by analyzing water use data, engaging stakeholders, and creating actionable recommendations.

WORK PERFORMED

Analyze available water meter data to identify patterns and areas of high, non-billable

consumption.

- Assist in investigating potential causes of excessive or unaccounted water usage.

- Collaborate with EWS Utilities staff to validate findings and refine analysis.

- Research best practices in water conservation, behavior change, and education programs.

- Develop a targeted education and awareness program aimed at reducing water use across

identified groups or facilities.

- Create communication materials (e.g., guides, handouts, or slide decks) to support water

consumption reduction.

- Document methodologies, assumptions, and analytical approaches used during the project.

- Prepare and deliver a comprehensive final report summarizing:

- Data analysis and methodology.

- Key findings and insights.

- Recommended actions and strategies for water conservation.

- Present findings to the EWS Utilities team and respond to feedback.

- Other relevant responsibilities as needed.

Decisions and actions taken, ignored or poorly analyzed can lead to increased costs to the University, and/or negative legal consequence.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reporting directly to the Utilities Manager, the incumbent works collaboratively with staff within Energy & Water Services. Decisions have a direct impact on the success of departmental goals, policies and procedures. Performance is evaluated against project and/or objectives, as measurable results are achieved.
