Backend Engineer (Enterprise Engineering)

As a Backend Engineer within Enterprise Engineering, you will be part of a team building internal and enterprise-facing software tools that serve the bank's internal staff, partners, and clients. This includes developing and maintaining core banking systems, merchant acquiring platforms, and other internal banking applications. You will work alongside engineers, architects, and product builders in a collaborative environment where your contributions make a direct impact on the people and businesses that rely on our platform every day.

About the Role: 

• Develop and maintain scalable and reliable microservices powering core banking systems, merchant acquiring platforms, and internal banking applications. 

• Build and integrate backend services under the guidance of senior engineers, contributing to the performance, reliability, and security of production systems. 

• Grow your technical skills within a collaborative team, taking increasing ownership of features and contributing to engineering best practices across Enterprise Engineering. 

What You'll Do: 

Backend Development: 

• Develop and maintain distributed systems and microservices using Java and Spring Boot with REST APIs and messaging systems. 

• Implement event-driven systems using Kafka to enable seamless communication between services. 

• Build and maintain backend services that underpin core banking systems, merchant acquiring platforms, and internal banking applications. 

• Contribute to ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability of backend services in production environments. 

System Design & Architecture: 

• Contribute to technical discussions and design decisions, implementing solutions aligned with engineering best practices. 

• Work with data models across relational (PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases. 

• Develop and consume internal and external APIs of reasonable complexity, following established service contracts. 

• Build and maintain containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes. 

AI Coding Tools: 

• Leverage AI coding tools (e.g. ILMU, Claude, GitHub Copilot) productively for backend development, test generation, and code review assistance. 

• Apply engineering judgement to validate, refine, and take ownership of AI-generated code before integration. 

Testing & Quality: 

• Write meaningful unit and integration tests across assigned backend services. 

• Participate in peer code reviews, providing and receiving constructive technical feedback. 

• Contribute to CI/CD quality gates and ensure services meet defined standards before release. 

CI/CD & DevOps: 

• Manage own CI/CD pipeline contributions, configure build steps, run automated tests, and troubleshoot pipeline failures. 

• Follow Git branching strategies and raise well-structured pull requests with clear context and test evidence. 

Collaboration: 

• Work closely with product owners, frontend engineers, QA teams, and senior engineers within Enterprise Engineering to clarify requirements and deliver features end-to-end. 

• Participate actively in sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog grooming sessions. 

• Communicate progress and raise blockers early to keep delivery on track. 

Documentation: 

• Produce and maintain technical documentation for backend services, APIs, and data models. 

• Contribute to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and engineering runbooks. 

What We're Seeking: 

• Malaysian citizen (holder of a valid MyKad). 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience with relevant professional certifications. 

• Minimum 2 years of hands-on backend software development experience. 

• Proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming (OOP) languages. 

• Experience with Spring Boot for building microservices and RESTful APIs. 

• Good understanding of messaging systems such as Kafka or equivalent event streaming platforms. 

• Experience with both relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases. 

• Familiarity with designing and consuming web APIs of reasonable complexity. 

• Hands-on experience with containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes. 

• Familiarity with at least one AI coding tool (e.g. ILMU, Claude, GitHub Copilot) and willingness to incorporate AI-assisted development into daily workflow. 

• Good communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration within Enterprise Engineering. 

• Curiosity and drive for continuous learning and improvement. 

• Familiarity with digital banking, core banking systems, or financial technology applications is an advantage.
