Description
MRI Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Research Software Engineer on the JETS II contract at NASA Johnson Space Center. You will support the Flight Sciences Laboratory (FSL), one of JSC's primary computing facilities-over 800 nodes, 26,000 cores, and 10+ petabytes of storage serving more than 1,000 users. The analyses running on FSL infrastructure support nearly every major NASA program, including International Space Station (ISS), Orion, Space Launch System (SLS), Commercial Crew, Lunar Gateway, and Human Landing System.
A Day in the Life
Your responsibilities will include partnering with FSL users to evaluate and optimize the group's software development practices and ensure the success of their projects. You will participate in the planning and major development efforts on software engineering projects for flight software, guidance and navigation, and analysis. You will work closely with partners and external contractors to meet their software requirements and address bugs. A core part of the role is acting as a mentor for good software development and engineering practices in HPC environments, helping FSL users get the most out of the cluster's tools and workflows in support of the NASA human spaceflight mission.
What We Are Looking For
Requirements:
- Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field, with 5–10 years of related experience (or a BS degree plus 4+ years of software engineering experience outside of the degree); license and certification may be required
- Experience programming in multiple programming languages, including compiled and interpreted languages, and the use of build systems like GNU Make
- Demonstrated experience with version control (Git), containers, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD)
- Experience working daily in a Linux OS, including using a command line interface (CLI)
- Experience helping other users in HPC services
- Demonstrated problem-solving, task planning, and effective communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment
Preferences:
- 6+ years of experience in addition to the degree
- Experience developing software for use in HPC environments
- Experience with Monte Carlo type workflows and optimizing them for use in HPC environments
- Experience with Trick-based simulation workflows and related toolsets
- Experience with modern software practices such as test-driven development, Agile development, generative AI coding assistants, and a firm knowledge of software development lifecycles
- Experience integrating C++, Fortran, Python, and shell-based workflows in HPC or simulation environments
- Demonstrated experience with MPI-based workflows
- Activity within the broader open-source software community
- Demonstrated experience with Podman in HPC environments
- Demonstrated experience with GitLab and Jenkins tools
