It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Reporting to the Correctional Programs Director, this position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility.

The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Key Duties Included:

- Communicate effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.

- Defend oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.

- Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.

- Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.

- Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.

- Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.

- Train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff regarding their duties and responsibilities.

- Account for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: $39,244.00 - 68,679.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of internal and/or external services available to offenders.

  • Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Education Equivalency Verification

The State of North Carolina/Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) uses the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) as a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent.

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference

Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
