Description
At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.
The Position
CXSD, the Customer Experience and Solution Design team at Roche Diagnostics, is looking for a curious and hands-on Generative AI Designer Intern to join ARC (AI for Roche Creators), a newly formed squad exploring the future of design at the intersection of creativity and AI technology. ARC builds AI augmented workflows, tools and prototypes that help designers, researchers and engineers move from idea to working experience 10x faster. As a Generative AI Designer, you will help move our design community from static digital prototypes to vibe coded prototypes that look, feel and behave like real products. You will turn concepts into functional prototypes using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, as well as generative tools for image, video, 3D and audio, and help define how a global design organization adopts generative AI in its daily work.
You will work closely with senior designers, human factors engineers, technologists and software engineers, learning how business requirements, regulatory constraints and user needs translate into design decisions in a healthcare context. You will be part of a design organization of more than 80 professionals who aim to transform the healthcare industry for the better.
The Opportunity
- Helping shift the way our designers prototype allows you to move from static, click-through mockups to vibe-coded prototypes built with real logic, real data, and real interactions.
- You prototype quickly by turning ideas, user needs, and design concepts into functional prototypes, visual concepts, motion studies, and 3D explorations using the right mix of generative tools.
- Close partnership with designers and researchers enables you to understand their workflows and identify high-value opportunities where AI can augment, rather than replace human creativity.
- Building small internal tools, plugins, and workflows using our One Design System and design tokens forms a core part of your efforts to speed up the design process.
- You help bridge experimental prototypes and production-ready solutions by translating design needs into clear technical requirements for engineering teams.
- Your hands-on support in usability testing covers the full lifecycle of prototypes across planning, preparation, conducting, and analyzing sessions.
- Joining a highly motivated and very kind team, you evaluate new AI models, tools, and techniques to share learnings with the wider design community, while contributing to demos, workshops, and training materials that help designers of all technical levels start vibe-coding their own prototypes.
Who you are
- You are currently enrolled at a university or have graduated within 12 months prior to the start of the internship in the fields of Interaction Design, UX Design, HCID, Computer Science, Creative Technology, Industrial Design, or a similar field.
- Hands-on experience with generative AI tools covers both AI coding tools such as Claude Code and generative media tools for image, video, 3D, or audio, with showcasing at least one project being required.
- You are comfortable with front-end basics including HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and React, allowing you to read, adapt, and debug the code that AI tools generate.
- A solid design foundation in UX, UI, and interaction design along with practical experience in Figma is essential, with showcasing a project being required.
- You understand how design systems and design tokens work, such as Material Design.
- A fast learning mindset drives you to enjoy experimenting and naturally share what you build with others.
- Fluency in English is required to collaborate and communicate design ideas clearly within an international, cross-functional team.
- Valuable nice-to-have assets include experience with node-based or visual AI workflow tools, LLM APIs, building simple AI agents, work with Arduino, Processing, or physical computing for experiences beyond screens, and active participation in the AI or design community through (side projects, open source, talks, posts).
Application Process
- Please upload your CV (in English) along with a certificate of enrolment (if you are currently studying) or your degree certificate (if you have already completed your studies).
- We look forward to receiving your portfolio - please make sure to include links to live prototypes or repositories where possible.
- Non-EU/Non-EFTA citizens must attach a confirmation from the university to the application documents, stating that a mandatory internship is part of the education and be continuously enrolled in their university for the whole duration of this internship.
Additional Information
- Please note that this position is designed purely as a practical internship, so writing an academic thesis alongside it is unfortunately not possible.
- The preferred start date for this internship is January 2027, or upon discussion.
- Duration: 6-12 months
