Description
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
- Conducts routine inspections and investigates complaints to ensure code compliance with ordinances for the City of Greenville under the minimum housing code.
- Investigates substandard or dilapidated residential properties or dwellings for compliance with applicable state and local codes and ordinances.
- Performs follow-up inspections of dwellings/structures that are undergoing repair to ensure compliance with minimum housing standards.
- Coordinates with the property owners to discuss a plan of action to address inspection results; ensures rehabilitation or demolition is carried out if necessary.
- Ensures code compliance with ordinances for: overgrown vegetation, excessive trash/ debris, parking on unimproved surfaces, graffiti, abandoned-nuisance-junked vehicles, and other public nuisances.
- Provides enforcement of temporary sign removal.
- Testifies in court proceedings regarding violations as needed.
- Performs extensive property ownership searches.
- Writes violation reports on structures and properties inspected; documents efforts to bring properties into compliance with ordinances, codes, laws, and regulations.
- Maintains accurate case files; prepares a variety of letters, records, and files.
- Compiles information for properties presented to City Council for demolition.
- Attends neighborhood association meetings as needed.
- Explains applicable ordinances and property & zoning codes to citizens, property owners, tenants and other necessary parties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED, supplemented by technical courses or college course work in building construction technology, planning, public administration, or related field; and
- At least one year of experience in building, renovations, or construction trades, inspecting, investigating, code compliance, or related fields, including some public contact work.
- Experience in a construction or regulatory environment is preferred.

- Must possess and maintain a valid, current North Carolina driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, or subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record.
