Performs routine service and cleaning on City vehicles and equipment, inspects vehicles, equipment, and facilities; performs related duties as required.
This class is characterized by the performance of semi-skilled work in the performance of routine service in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the direct supervision of a Lead Equipment Mechanic.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Cleans vehicles and equipment exteriors; vacuums and cleans interiors, cleans windows, windshields, and mirrors; removes trash and graffiti; operates and services wash-rack and cleaner as required.
Cleans facilities, including garage, parts’ room, grounds, and offices; sorts and arranges tools and equipment; and performs other janitorial duties as required.
Transports City vehicles, including buses, from one location to another as needed. Secures garage facility as assigned.
Refuels gas, alternate fuel and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment; maintains fluid levels; records mileage and hours in service; records fuel and other fluid usage.
Sorts and counts passenger fare-box revenue using coin/currency counting equipment.
Steam cleans engines; cleans and paints wheel rims; replaces upholstery.
Knowledge of: routine vehicle care and maintenance; simple record keeping methods; safety rules and safe work habits.
Ability to: work safely with others in the performance of a variety of routine maintenance work; understand and follow oral and written directions; perform simple arithmetical computations; prepare routine records; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Education and/or Experience: any combination of education, training, and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary. Ability and willingness to learn and perform the duties associated with routine vehicle service and related record keeping.
Required Licenses and Certifications: possession of or ability to obtain a Class B commercial California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record at the time of appointment. Possession of a valid Medical Examiner’s certificate. Possession of or ability to obtain a Passenger Endorsement certificate from DMV.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, grasp, feel, perform repetitive motions or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to pull, push, walk, stand, crouch, kneel and stoop. Depending on assignment, the employee is occasionally required to balance and climb. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
Depending on assignment, the employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include those required for those who operate cars, trucks, and other heavy equipment.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job and depending on assignment, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration; is exposed to fumes, odors, oils, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
The work environment is frequently noisy.
