FAES | Horticulture and Crop Science

Supports the teaching, research, advising, experiential learning, and extension educational activities of the controlled environment horticulture program in the Department of Horticulture & Crop Science. Participates in the re-envisioning and development of relevant content for courses such as HCS 3521 (Basic Greenhouse Production), HCS 3522 (Sustainable Irrigation and Fertigation Techniques), HCS 2300 (Introduction to Hydroponics), HCS 4300 (Hydroponic Production), HCS 4301 (Hydroponic Production Lab), HCS 4200 (Experiential Learning in CEA) and HCS 2307 (Sustainable Agriculture Practical Experience). Teaches HCS 2307 in both autumn and spring semesters, developing unique learning modules for each semester and coordinating with HCS Student Farm personnel to maximize collaboration between enrolled students and Student Farm production activities.

Assists in the delivery of experiential and hands-on learning exercises in the above-mentioned classes by organizing resources, developing content, providing demonstrations, and engaging in one-on-one feedback with students. Provides year-round care and maintenance for the equipment and plant materials used in the above-mentioned classes. Occasionally provides assistance in the delivery of laboratory exercises in other HCS classes on an as-needed basis. Serves as a faculty advisor for Horticulture and Crop Science majors specializing in Controlled Environment Agriculture and supports student engagement, progression, and career preparation in the discipline.

Mentors research activities of undergraduate students and advises student organizations as appropriate. Participates in extending research findings in controlled environment horticulture to external stakeholders by assisting in outreach program development and delivery, contributing to appropriate industry groups through authoring or co-authoring trade magazine articles, fact sheets, and other modes of electronic communication. Works as part of an interdisciplinary controlled environment team, which includes OSU Extension Specialists and Educators, to advise and educate commercial horticulture producers in Ohio. Serves as a standing member of the HCS-Columbus Greenhouse, Nursery and Growth Chamber committee.

Supports and leads research projects focused on improving the efficiency of controlled environment and open field food systems. Collaborates with other PI’s and interdisciplinary teams to design and conduct meaningful research projects supporting growers and the horticultural industry

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Education Required

Master's Level Degree with a Major in horticulture, controlled environment agriculture or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Required Qualifications

Required: Master's degree in Horticulture, or related field; experience in horticultural crop production systems in protected environments.

 

 Desired: PhD in horticulture, educational/experiential background in controlled environment agriculture production. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work closely with other people; teaching and advising experience, and experience with research, teaching or mentoring programs focused on members of underrepresented groups.

Department Information

The Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) consists of 39 faculty who specialize in agronomic and specialty crops, turfgrass systems, and ornamental horticulture at ecosystem, field, plant, cellular, and molecular levels. The department houses three undergraduate majors, Sustainable Plant Systems, Professional Golf Management, and an interdisciplinary Sustainable Agriculture. Sustainable Plant Systems is the flagship major of HCS and includes specializations in: Agronomy, Agroecology, Controlled Environment Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Biosciences, and Turfgrass Science. We also offer MS and PhD programs.
