Apprentice, Mechanic Fleet

Job Summary:

The main responsibility of the Apprentice, Mechanic Fleet involves the application of automotive mechanics knowledge related to the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles and special equipment installed in said units. Receive instructions from the supervisor and mechanics, who review the work to make sure it conforms to established regulations and procedures.

Job Description:

• All completed work will be certified by a licensed mechanic or Supervisor.

• Replaces all types of engine accessories, brake adjustment, replacement of chassis accessories, fluids, etc.

• Works in the repair of light vehicles, heavy duty, and other equipment such as cranes, bucket truck, digger derricks and air compressors, backhoe, dozer, compressors, etc.

• Repairs and changes tires.

• Performs preventive maintenance work on the fleet.

• Works on the lift to maintain the vehicles and equipment.

• Cleans the section of the workshop assigned to them

• Assists the mechanic in vehicle or equipment repairs.

• Travels to different locations to look for defective vehicles to be repaired in the workshop

• Drives heavy motor vehicles in the performance of their duties.

• Inspects the assigned vehicle before departure, makes repairs in case of unforeseen situations, such as tire changes, drive belt, etc., and informs the Supervisor about deficiencies or damage observed in the vehicle such as a missing horn, lights, spare tire, and license plates; loose brakes, worn tires, etc.

• Executes other duties related to the above as required

• Follows all policies and procedures

• Performs other duties as assigned

• Performs major storm restoration work and associated drills as assigned.

Additional Job Description:

Education and Experience

• High school Diploma or GED

• 3 to 6 months in mechanical work or similar experience.

• Exam Requirements (passed the following exam required for this class): General Skills

License/Certifications

• Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license Category 9 is required

• Permit to Operate Commercial Vehicle from The Transport and Other Public Services Bureau (NTSP, "Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos de Puerto Rico")

• Driver's Record (DTOP)

• Special Endorsement for hazardous materials from NTSP, is preferred
