Power BI Developer

The client has an exciting three-year transformation project, moving some of our core performance data workloads from Business Objects across to a modern Azure based Data Warehouse, and Power BI. We’ve made good progress over the last few years to progress our adoption of Power BI and are now rapidly advancing towards the project end in July 2027 where we are hoping to have significantly reduced our use of the Business Objects platform, pending full decommissioning in future years. We’ve built up a large amount of data in our new Data Warehouse, providing more reliable access to data for the teams. As we approach the end of the reporting year, we’d like to maximise our investment in the project to date and help support our users to get the most out of the new tools and access they have.

There are two emerging groups of users, who will need our support to get the most out of our data platform:

• Data Developers/Analysts – these users will be using Power BI to build and maintain PBI semantic models and reports, for reporting by end users in the Power BI Service. These users have good PBI knowledge, but need support to progress this to maturity and to support them building highly effective, reusable semantic models
• Data Analysts/Researchers – these users will connect to shared Power BI semantic models using Power BI, PBI Report Builder and Excel, and will interrogate and produce data for internal and external audiences. These users have some basic PBI knowledge, but will need more support to help replace their existing Business Objects based workflows

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Power BI Consultant, who will work as part of the project team to assist our users. We need someone who can work as part of a team or on their own, directly supporting users and offering a consultancy-style support offering to SMEs in our reporting teams. The ideal candidate would have deep PBI knowledge in a performance environment, with policing, government or national security experience a bonus.

This will be a hands-on role, with an opportunity to help make sure we achieve our aims to reduce our usage of Business Objects and build firm foundations for more modern performance reporting in future years.

Core Responsibilities

Working to support our teams, you will:

• Provide direct technical support to our performance analyst/developer SMEs, working with them to help them improve their use of Power BI alongside a SQL Datawarehouse, and in particular Power BI semantic models
• Supporting the development of requirements for our warehouse developers to improve the design of the data warehouse, supporting efficient and effective data usage
• Designing and delivering informal training to small groups, enabling them to get started and improve their working practices
• Be hands on, building commissioned Power BI semantic models from detailed requirements to support the teams with short term capacity gaps
• Supporting teams to understand business requirements and turn these into technical solutions
• Working with leadership in the performance teams to help them explore what future models of working may look like in their areas, following industry best practice

Skills required

You should be a confident and experienced Power BI professional. We expect you to bring the following skills:

• Essential - Power BI: Building datasets, reports, administration of the Power BI Service
• Essential - DAX and M
• Essential - T-SQL, including connecting to SQL data sources from Power BI, and a good understanding of query folding
• Essential – Data Modelling & Dataset Design
• Essential – Training experience
• Essential – Working in a mentoring/support/consultancy capacity
• Desirable – Fabric DP-600
• Desirable – Microsoft Certified Trainer
