Position Summary

The Driver Manager is responsible for the leadership, engagement, accountability, and performance of the driver and coordinator workforce supporting the Pace Chicago ADA contract. This position serves as the primary leader for employee relations, attendance, workforce readiness, labor relations, and daily driver support while promoting a culture of safety, reliability, accountability, and exceptional customer service.

The Driver Manager works closely with Operations, Dispatch, Scheduling, Safety & Training, Compliance, Human Resources, and union leadership to ensure a qualified, engaged, and contract-ready workforce.

Essential Responsibilities

Workforce Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop Drivers and Coordinators.
  • Foster a positive and engaging work environment.
  • Maintain an open-door approach for employee concerns.
  • Support employee engagement, retention, and recognition initiatives.
  • Conduct coaching, performance discussions, and performance evaluations.

Attendance, Accountability, and Labor Relations

  • Monitor attendance, schedule adherence, and workforce reliability.
  • Conduct coaching and corrective action in accordance with company policies and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Investigate employee concerns and performance issues.
  • Partner with Human Resources and Operations leadership on employee relations matters.
  • Support grievance preparation and labor relations activities.

Workforce Readiness and Scheduling Oversight

  • Ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained to support contract requirements.
  • Oversee driver schedules, bids, PTO administration, and overtime opportunities.
  • Partner with the Scheduling Coordinator to manage workforce planning activities.
  • Monitor staffing trends and identify operational risks.

Operational Support

  • Oversee vehicle assignments and pull-out readiness through Coordinators.
  • Support service delivery by ensuring drivers are prepared and available to perform assigned work.
  • Collaborate with Dispatch, Operations, and Maintenance to address workforce-related service impacts.
  • Assist with operational recovery efforts during staffing shortages and service disruptions.

Time and Attendance Accountability

  • Maintain accountability for the accuracy, review, and oversight of employee time and attendance records.
  • Monitor attendance trends, call-offs, tardiness, and schedule adherence.
  • Review timekeeping exceptions and ensure issues are addressed promptly.
  • Partner with the Scheduling Coordinator to ensure timely completion of weekly time and attendance processes.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Safety & Training regarding corrective actions and retraining requirements.
  • Collaborate with Compliance regarding certification requirements and workforce readiness.
  • Work closely with Dispatch and Operations leadership to support contract performance.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that improve employee experience and service delivery.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct supervision of:

  • Drivers
  • Coordinators
  • Scheduling Coordinator (if implemented)

Key Leadership Principle

The Driver Manager owns the driver workforce.

This position serves as the primary leader and escalation point for Drivers and Coordinators and is responsible for ensuring the workforce is engaged, accountable, adequately staffed, and prepared to support successful service delivery on the Pace Chicago ADA contract.
