Social Video Journalist, LGBT+ | Segment - TR Foundation

Openly, the Thomson Reuters Foundation's award-winning LGBTQ+ news brand, is seeking a creative journalist to produce fair, accurate, and impartial social-first video journalism for global audiences. The role focuses on reaching younger audiences with compelling queer stories on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, covering LGBTQ+ rights, policy and geopolitical developments, and human-interest reporting.

The successful candidate will research, pitch, film, and edit short-form videos, with opportunities to develop longer YouTube content over time. They should bring strong news judgment, visual storytelling skills, and a commitment to centering marginalized voices while meeting the Thomson Reuters Foundation's rigorous editorial standards and Trust Principles. The position is remote and involves working closely with a Berlin-based Multimedia Editor and an intern in Buenos Aires.

About the Role

In this opportunity as a Social Video Journalist, LGBT+, you will:

  • Research, pitch, report and produce short-form video stories for Openly's social channels on global LGBTQ+ rights issues

  • Monitor news developments and identify timely, newsworthy angles relevant to LGBTQ+ communities around the world

  • Edit social video pieces filmed by freelance contributors around the world

  • Develop mid-form video formats for our brand-new YouTube channel

  • Occasionally create carousels for Openly's social media channels to complement video content

  • Consistently meet deadlines while maintaining Openly's standards of accuracy and impartiality

About You

You're a fit for the role of Social Video Journalist, LGBT+ if your background includes,

  • At least two years of journalism experience, including reporting, filming and editing your own social-first video pieces

  • Excellent video editing skills with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects

  • Professional fluency in English (written and spoken)

  • A working knowledge of LGBTQ+ rights issues, both in Southeast Asia and globally

  • A strong understanding of social media platforms, short-form video and creator-style storytelling

  • A genuine passion for covering under-reported stories and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities

  • Familiarity with Canva or similar design tools is a plus

  • Strong research skills and attention to detail

  • Fixed-term opportunity to create impactful global LGBTQ+ journalism through 31 December 2027.
