Overview

In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health has more than 50.000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world and is committed to an inclusive workplace. We are celebrating over 50 years of service to the Yale community. Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy.

The Medical Assistant works as a member of the Yale Health Specialty care team by providing seamless, coordinated and compassionate care at each patient encounter.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide care to patients as directed by nursing and clinician staff.

  • Assist the clinician with the daily operations of the clinic, including support of minor surgical set up and procedures.

  • Maintain a comfortable, orderly, safe and clean environment for patient care.

  • Prepare exam rooms.

  • Select and organize medical supplies along with restocking patient rooms.

  • Maintain medical equipment in good working order.

  • Prepare patients for examinations.

  • Measure and record vital signs.

  • Collect pertinent data relevant to the patient visit.

  • Provide routine information related to medical treatments and procedures.

  • Prepare for next day/same day clinic by doing chart prep reviews, EMR for tests due and anticipates what patient/clinician may need.

  • Access the EMR (electronic medical record) as appropriate.

  • Respond to tasks and messages in a timely manner.

  • Record and report patient information.

  • Order and maintain inventory of medical supplies for the department.

  • Maintain dirty and clean utility areas.

  • Performs point of care testing, including but not limited to: ECGS, HbA1c, bladder scanner techniques, CLIA waived testing, crutch teaching, boot/brace/DME fittings and assist with sterile and aseptic procedures as needed.

Remain current with all annual training and competencies, complete trainings in a timely manner, cross-train to other MA roles as indicated by department need; attend department and org wide in-services and trainings; organizational committee participation as needed. Attend and actively participate in all department, team and organizational meetings as indicated. Perform clerical functions, prepare patient records, and provide assistance to clinicians and nursing staff in support of clinical activities. Provide support to the front desk staff as needed. Greet patients, check demographic data, answer phones, make appointments, and route calls as appropriate. Communicate clearly and professionally at all times to all team members, patients, clinicians an managers. Follow all departmental and organizational policies related to Specialty Services and the MA role.

Schedule: Full-Time, 37.50 HRS; Generally scheduled M-F between 8:30 a.m.  – 5:00 p.m.    Occasional evenings, early mornings, weekends or holidays/recess may also be required.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with emphasis on customer service. Demonstrated ability to perform in high volume, stressful patient care situations.

2. Proficiency in obtaining and documenting vital signs.  Demonstrated ability in performing EKGS and CLIA waived testing. 

3. Ability to collaborate with providers and staff; ability to work well in teams. Ability to assist with departmental ordering for supplies and medications as needed.  Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.

4. Electronic Health record /EPIC proficiency.  Data entry skills associated with the use of computers in a clinical scheduling/electronic medical record.

5. Ability to assist with patient paperwork including disability and FMLA documentation. Ability to assist with chart audits and tracking of high-risk patient populations.  Demonstrated ability providing support as a medical assistant in an ambulatory care setting.


Preferred Skills and Abilities

Current BCLS certification.

Experience with set up and assisting with minor surgical procedures.

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or American Registry of Medical Assistants (or ability to get certification/registration within 90 days of employment).

Health Requirements

This role is a healthcare worker position. Healthcare workers (HCW) are defined as university employees working a healthcare setting who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients, human research subjects or infectious materials including body substance, contaminated medical supplies, devices and equipment, surfaces, or air.  HCW have specific health requirements that must be met prior to starting work, including MMR vaccine or immunity, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or immunity, TB screening, COVID vaccine according to University policy, hepatitis B vaccine or immunity, and annual flu vaccination.
