Job Description

Total Compensation

  • Work Location: This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, pursuant to the College’s Work Location Policy.

About the Position
The Head Tutor oversees the operation of Haverford College’s Economics Question Center (EQC), a peer-tutoring resource for students enrolled in Economics courses. The Head Tutor is responsible for training, supporting, and supervising the student tutors who staff the EQC; communicating with faculty; and helping ensure that the Center provides a welcoming, effective, and academically supportive learning environment.

The EQC operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 7:30–9:30 p.m. in Lutnick Library during the academic year. The EQC operates during the fall semester from approximately August 31 through December 11 and during the spring semester from approximately January 18 through April 30. The Head Tutor is expected to be present at the EQC at least one evening per week.

Primary Responsibilities

Tutor Support and Training

  • Train tutors on effective peer tutoring practices, emphasizing helping students develop their own understanding and problem-solving skills rather than simply providing answers
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and mentorship to tutors
  • Address interpersonal issues, disputes, or other situations that arise among tutors or students using the Center, referring significant concerns to the Economics Department Chair as appropriate
  • Promote a collegial, inclusive, and intellectually engaged environment in which students feel comfortable seeking assistance

Faculty Liaison

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Economics faculty and Question Center tutors, communicating faculty guidance, concerns, and relevant course information

Center Administration

  • Develop and maintain the weekly tutor schedule, including arranging coverage for absences and schedule changes
  • Identify opportunities to improve the organization and effectiveness of the Question Center
  • Collect and organize instructional resources for tutors, including practice problems, model solutions, and other materials provided by Economics faculty

Line of Report: The EQC Head Tutor reports to the Chair of the Economics Department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics or a related field or currently a doctoral candidate in economics or related field

Professional Competencies

  • Deep understanding of core undergraduate concepts in economics
  • An understanding of how assigned problems fit into the broader economic enterprise
  • Effective communicator with the ability to explain complex concepts in multiple ways
  • Experience teaching

To Apply: Interested applicants are invited to submit an application through Haverford College’s Workday career website (no other form of application is accepted). A complete application includes 1) a resume and 2) a cover letter summarizing your interest and how your experiences and skills meet the requirements of the position. Please email [email protected] with questions about submitting your materials.

The application deadline is September 13, 2026. Application review will begin after the deadline has passed. Should the search committee be interested in pursuing your candidacy, you will hear from them directly. Finalists will be asked to provide three professional references.
