Description

Middle School Humanities Teacher

Start Date: September 2026

The Role

We are seeking an experienced, intellectually curious and student-focused Middle School Humanities Teacher to join a strong and well-established Humanities Department. The successful candidate will teach an engaging, integrated Humanities curriculum incorporating History, Geography, Civics and Global Studies.

The role requires a teacher who can inspire curiosity about people, places, cultures and significant historical events while helping students develop critical thinking, research, communication and academic writing skills. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high expectations, a commitment to inquiry-based learning and the ability to make Humanities relevant and accessible to students from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The School

Founded in 2016, the school is a well-established K–12 international school located at the foot of YuQuan Mountain in the Haidian District, an area renowned for academic excellence and close links to leading universities. The large, modern campus includes specialist Humanities teaching spaces, extensive green areas and a bilingual, internationally aligned curriculum that blends Chinese and Western educational philosophies.

Within the Middle School, Humanities plays a central role in developing students' critical thinking, global awareness and understanding of different societies and cultures. The programme provides a strong foundation for future High School study, including AP History subjects and the AP Capstone Diploma.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The teacher will deliver high-quality Middle School Humanities lessons incorporating History, Geography, Civics, Global Studies and related areas of Social Studies.
  • They will design engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences that encourage students to ask questions, investigate significant issues and make connections between historical events, geographical factors and contemporary global challenges.
  • The teacher will support students in developing essential academic skills, including source analysis, research, critical thinking, structured writing, discussion, debate and evidence-based argument.
  • They will use a range of teaching approaches, including historical enquiry, primary and secondary sources, maps, data, case studies, collaborative learning and project-based activities.
  • The teacher will differentiate learning effectively to meet the needs of students with varying levels of ability, confidence and English-language proficiency.
  • They will contribute to curriculum planning and development within the Humanities Department, ensuring clear progression, appropriate academic challenge and alignment with international standards.
  • Assessment will be based on written work, research projects, presentations, classroom participation and examinations, with timely and constructive feedback provided to support student progress.
  • The teacher will collaborate with colleagues across the Humanities Department and wider Middle School to develop interdisciplinary learning opportunities and shared academic projects.
  • They will contribute to the wider life of the school through activities such as Model United Nations, Humanities clubs, cultural events, field trips, academic competitions or community-based projects

Learning and Classroom Environment

  • The teacher will maintain a safe, inclusive and intellectually stimulating classroom environment that encourages curiosity, respectful discussion and independent thinking.
  • They will support students in considering different cultural and historical perspectives and expressing their ideas thoughtfully and respectfully.
  • The teacher will establish clear expectations for learning, behaviour, organisation and academic integrity.
  • They will build positive relationships with students and contribute to their academic, social and personal development.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Applicants should hold a degree in History, Geography, Social Studies, Political Science, International Relations or a closely related field.
  • A recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE, QTS, state certification or a national teaching licence is required.
  • Experience teaching Humanities, History, Geography or Social Studies at Middle School level is essential.
  • Candidates should demonstrate strong subject knowledge and experience using inquiry-based, interdisciplinary and project-based approaches.
  • Experience working with multilingual learners or teaching within an international or bilingual school environment will be considered an advantage.
  • Applicants should possess excellent communication, organisation and classroom-management skills, together with a genuine enthusiasm for working with Middle School students.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • The school offers a highly competitive remuneration package reflecting experience and qualifications.
  • Annual salaries typically range from USD $53,000 to $65,000, with additional bonuses and pension contributions.
  • Teachers receive paid winter and summer holidays, public holidays and a contract completion bonus.
  • The package includes comprehensive international health insurance for the teacher and dependants, social and medical insurance, visa and work permit support and full relocation assistance.
  • Accommodation is provided on campus or through a generous housing allowance, alongside an annual airfare allowance, free meals on school days and education benefits for dependent children aged 5–18.
  • Staff benefit from access to excellent facilities, extensive professional development opportunities and a supportive, academically focused staff community.

We Are Proud to Offer

  • A dedicated and internationally minded teaching team.
  • Strong and supportive leadership committed to academic excellence.
  • A modern campus with outstanding teaching and learning resources.
  • A collaborative environment that values inquiry, creativity and professional growth.
  • A comprehensive salary and benefits package designed to support a rewarding and enriching teaching experience.
