The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) is currently seeking a Submarine Educator who acquaints OMSI guests with the Blueback submarine while simultaneously discussing relevant scientific concepts that are meant to inspire visitor curiosity about naval history and technology. Educators provide visitors with a rare glimpse into the experience of living and working on a submarine by providing an overview of the submarine's past, as well as pointing out major engineering innovations of the Blueback and its role in the evolution of submarine technology.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provides interpretive tours to groups of up to 20 people;
  • Performs submarine queuing responsibilities, which includes promoting the submarine and museum experiences in the OMSI lobby;
  • Completes submarine cleaning, maintenance, and administrative tasks as assigned;
  • Performs daily submarine opening and closing duties. Complete corresponding checklist when needed;
  • Executes all submarine safety and security protocols in order to protect staff, volunteers, and visitors;
  • Maintains working knowledge of submarine and naval history and relevant current affairs.

  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements.
  • Ability to learn current equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice theories and practical applications, including critical theories of systemic oppression, unconscious bias, and personal identity and intersectionality matters.
  • 1 year of demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced public-facing, retail or service environment.

Preferences:

  • Navy or military background;
  • Demonstrated interest in history;
  • Working knowledge of one or more technical areas such as electronics, electrical, HVAC, information technology, plumbing, or machinery.
