Job Description:

The Senior Project Development Manager – Energy Storage Technologies role at Ferrovial Energy is responsible for originating, developing, evaluating, acquiring, and advancing utility-scale energy storage opportunities across the U.S. and Canada. The role will focus on a broad range of storage technologies, including lithium-ion battery storage, thermal storage, iron-based storage, vanadium redox flow batteries, and other emerging short-duration and long-duration energy storage solutions. The position will support standalone storage, renewable-plus-storage hybrid projects, behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter applications, data center energy infrastructure solutions, and other strategic storage opportunities aligned with Ferrovial Energy’s growth objectives.

The position will be based at the Ferrovial Energy US headquarters in Austin, TX, and reports to the Director, Project Development. You will work closely with the U.S. Development team, finance, M&A, engineering, commercial, legal, construction, asset management, and corporate strategy teams. The Senior Manager will identify and secure new sites, evaluate technology and market opportunities, lead commercial and technical due diligence, support acquisitions and partnership structures, build relationships with technology providers and developers, and prepare executive-level materials for investment decisions, business planning, and management updates. The goal is to build a differentiated energy storage pipeline that supports grid reliability, renewable integration, customer load growth, data center power needs, and long-term value creation for Ferrovial Energy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as project lead for standalone energy storage, hybrid renewable-plus-storage, and data center-related energy infrastructure opportunities, coordinating internal cross-functional teams and external consultants across development, interconnection, permitting, land, engineering, finance, legal, commercial, construction, and asset management workstreams.
  • Originate, screen, and advance energy storage projects across multiple technologies, including lithium-ion batteries, thermal storage, iron-based storage, vanadium redox flow batteries, and other emerging short-duration and long-duration storage solutions.
  • Evaluate market applications for storage projects, including resource adequacy, capacity, ancillary services, congestion management, renewable integration, curtailment mitigation, resiliency, microgrids, tolling structures, data center power solutions, and customer-specific energy needs.
  • Lead site identification and project development activities, including land control, permitting strategy, environmental review, stakeholder outreach, community engagement, utility coordination, interconnection strategy, transmission review, and project schedule management.
  • Support commercial, technical, and financial modeling for storage projects, including revenue forecasts, dispatch assumptions, market participation strategies, degradation and augmentation assumptions, lifecycle cost analysis, CAPEX/OPEX estimates, tax credit sensitivity, and investment case preparation.
  • Prepare executive-level briefings, business updates, investment committee materials, project memoranda, risk assessments, and strategic recommendations for senior and executive management.
  • Support M&A, project acquisition, co-development, and joint venture opportunities by leading or contributing to due diligence, valuation inputs, transaction structuring, development risk assessment, technology review, and negotiation support.
  • Develop and manage strategic partnerships with technology suppliers, developers, utilities, load-serving entities, data center customers, EPC contractors, engineering firms, consultants, landowners, public agencies, and financial partners.
  • Prepare, review, and manage requests for information, proposals, bids, technology evaluations, owner’s engineer scopes, and consultant work products related to energy storage development and execution.
  • Coordinate project handoff and continuity from development into financing, procurement, construction, commissioning, operations, asset management, and long-term performance monitoring.
  • Track storage technology trends, policy developments, ISO/RTO market rules, utility requirements, interconnection reforms, data center load growth, and evolving commercial structures for short-duration and long-duration storage.
  • Participate in industry conferences, technology roundtables, customer meetings, and partner discussions to build market intelligence, identify opportunities, and strengthen Ferrovial Energy’s visibility in the storage sector.
  • Manage assigned project budgets, objectives, schedules, development milestones, risk registers, consultant scopes, and internal reporting obligations.
  • Support, mentor, and coordinate more junior development managers, associates, analysts, and consultants working on assigned projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, integrity, respect, accountability, collaboration, and commercial discipline across all project activities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Engineering, finance, economics, business, environmental, or other relevant degree preferred; equivalent experience in energy storage, power infrastructure, project development, or investment analysis will be considered.
  • Minimum of 6 to 9 years of relevant experience in energy storage, renewable energy, power generation, infrastructure development, IPP, utility, EPC, consulting, investment, or project acquisition roles.
  • Required experience with utility-scale energy storage development, including standalone storage and hybrid renewable-plus-storage projects; experience with data center energy infrastructure, behind-the-meter solutions, microgrids, or large-load power solutions preferred.
  • Strong understanding of short-duration and long-duration energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion BESS, thermal storage, iron-based storage, vanadium redox flow batteries, and other emerging storage technologies.
  • Experience developing, acquiring, financing, or evaluating storage projects across the full lifecycle, from origination, market screening, land, interconnection, permitting, and stakeholder outreach through financing, construction readiness, commissioning, and operations support.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and interpret project financial models, market models, dispatch scenarios, lifecycle cost comparisons, revenue forecasts, sensitivity analyses, and investment materials for storage assets.
  • Required experience supporting M&A, project acquisitions, co-development structures, joint ventures, partnerships, or strategic investments in energy storage, renewables, data centers, or adjacent energy infrastructure sectors.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and commercially oriented materials for executive management, including investment committee presentations, management updates, project approvals, risk summaries, and strategic recommendations.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. interconnection and transmission processes across multiple ISO/RTO and utility markets, including queue strategy, grid constraints, congestion, curtailment, capacity markets, ancillary services, storage revenue opportunities, and market-specific rules in regions such as ERCOT, SPP, MISO, PJM, CAISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, WECC, and SERC.
  • Established network with storage technology providers, project developers, utilities, load-serving entities, commercial off-takers, data center customers, EPC contractors, consultants, land agents, public agencies, and financial partners preferred.
  • Strong stakeholder outreach and communication skills, with the ability to engage landowners, community leaders, local officials, regulators, utilities, customers, industry groups, internal executive stakeholders, and cross-functional internal teams, including other project developers, engineers, EPC, construction, finance, legal, commercial, and asset management personnel.
  • Commercially astute, proactive, collaborative, autonomous, flexible, and solutions-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities, anticipate risks, and drive projects forward in a dynamic market environment.
  • Available to travel as required for project development, stakeholder meetings, technology diligence, partner engagement, site visits, conferences, and transaction-related activities.
