Summary of Job Duties:
The Police Sergeant works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police and the direct supervision of the Patrol Lieutenant. This position supervises assigned Patrol Officers and Dispatchers and is responsible for enforcing traffic laws, criminal laws, parking regulations, and departmental policies. The Police Sergeant supports a safe and secure environment for patients, employees, students, visitors, and the broader campus community. This position is governed by UAMS policies and the standards established by the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and at least two years of certified law enforcement experience. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license, and hold current Police Officer certification and a General Certificate from the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training (CLEST).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Have basic computer skills with a general knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Ability to properly prepare and write police reports.
Ability to communicate and maintain a good rapport with the campus population.
Ability to engage in and maintain control of persons by use of minimal force needed in required situations.
Knowledge of law enforcement practices, methods, and techniques.
Knowledge of law enforcement traffic, criminal laws, and departmental regulations and procedures.
Ability to enforce parking regulations.
Ability to operate motor vehicles used in work activities Skill in the operations of firearms.
Ability to walk a minimum of 8 to 12 miles in a 12-hour shift.
Ability to climb stairwells.
Additional Information:
Responsibilities
Supervises Patrol Officers and Dispatchers assigned to the shift. Manages work schedules, evaluates performance, provides training and development, and ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Escalates employee grievances and significant performance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Provides safety and security services for the campus community through foot and vehicle patrols, traffic control, building access assistance, patient transportation, and monitoring emergency response activities.
Investigates campus accidents and incidents. Collects statements, evidence, and other relevant information and prepares detailed reports. May make arrests and provide court testimony as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
