We're hiring a Lead Model Design Engineer to own delivery, resources and technical assurance across an allocated Model Design area. You'll make sure aerodynamic requirements are translated into robust, manufacturable solutions ready for testing, and that your team has the priorities, capability and support to deliver.
This is a leadership role covering both technical assurance and people management. You'll set priorities, allocate work, balance resources and escalate what can't be resolved within the team. You'll also be the principal delivery interface for your area, aligning with other functions and resolving cross functional barriers as they come up.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the timing, quality and delivery performance of your allocated Model Design area
- Ensure appropriate mechanical design, CAD, design for manufacture and assembly, structural, tolerance and verification approaches are applied, leading technical solutions where required
- Review, assign and progress manufacturing, build and non conformance issues, removing or escalating cross functional barriers and prioritising corrective action
- Own Model Part Generator capability and priorities across your area, ensuring consistency across Model Design groups and relevant company interfaces
- Assure configuration, peer and hierarchical checking and release arrangements, and consistent application of FIA Restricted Wind Tunnel Testing requirements, escalating unresolved risks
- Own model quality, test readiness and test efficiency performance within your area, coordinating the response to significant design related test issues
- Act as the principal delivery interface for your area, aligning priorities with other functions and escalating significant risks to the Head of Model Design
Managing your team
- Coach, guide and train team members and those in assigned leadership roles
- Ensure team members have clear roles, responsibilities, objectives and development priorities
- Manage and develop a high performing team that reflects the Team Values
- Model proactive, responsible and professional conduct, and exercise management responsibilities consistently
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Engineering degree or equivalent experience, with established leadership of delivery in F1 wind tunnel model development or a comparable fast paced environment
- Broad mechanical design and advanced 3D CAD judgement, ideally with strong CATIA skills
- Broad expertise in design for manufacture and assembly, materials and manufacturing processes
- Capability to assure structural, tolerance, positioning and verification approaches across a team
- Experience managing the ownership and technical consistency of multiple Model Part Generators
- Experience assuring configuration, checking and release arrangements, including FIA Restricted Wind Tunnel Testing requirements
- Advanced leadership, problem solving and communication skills, balancing safety, quality, delivery, cost and risk
- Established people management and resource allocation experience, with strong wind tunnel model and test understanding
