The Oncology Nurse Navigator is a professional registered nurse with oncology knowledge who provides individualized support to patients and caregivers to overcome healthcare system barriers. Using the nursing process, this role promotes informed decision-making, timely access to care, and serves as a key liaison among multidisciplinary providers.

The Oncology Nurse Navigator at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is a professional registered nurse with proficient oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Utilizing the nursing process, an Oncology Nurse Navigator promotes informed decision making and timely access to quality patient care while providing a vital link in communication between multidisciplinary providers both internal and external to MUSC during initial treatment planning.

Job Description

This position navigates patients through diagnostic resolution and transition to specialty care as needed. The navigator applies evidence-based guidelines, ensures timely follow-up, and supports consistent care coordination across the continuum. The position will:

•Improve timely access to specialty oncology care

•Reduces friction at high‑risk transition points

•Optimize capacity, scheduling accuracy, and throughput

•Advance standardization, equity, and patient‑centered access

•Improves patient and provider satisfaction around oncology access

Additional Skills

- Strong clinical judgment and care coordination skills
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities
- Experience with EMR systems (Epic preferred)
- Knowledge of oncology pathways
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide patient-centered, culturally competent care

Minimum Education and Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and a minimum of three years related clinical nursing experience required; oncology nursing experience preferred. Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in lieu of BSN. In addition, the applicant must have considerable knowledge of complex medical terminology and advanced disease processes, strong interpersonal skills, ability to delegate to appropriate personnel, ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships both internally and externally, strong organizational skills, ability to rapidly prioritize/reprioritize, strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work autonomously and in teams, critical-thinking skills, and ability to multi-task. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
