Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Creates and repairs the most complex and complicated tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, parts, and prototypes according to department needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Studies print specs, sketches, and descriptions to visualize product to be made. 

1. Designs, develops and computes dimensions; plans layout and assembly operations.

1. Sets-up and operates all machine tools including lathe, grinder and milling machine to machine parts and verify their conformance to specifications.

1. Assembles mechanisms and parts to close tolerances.

1. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances on finished jigs, fixtures, dies, and prototypes using measuring instruments.

1. Heat treats tools or parts as required.

1. Repairs and modifies existing tools, jigs, fixture, etc. and builds prototypes.

1. Instructs requesting department on operation of finished parts.

1. Corrects any nonconformance to requirements associated with toolroom.

1. Keeps production records.

OTHER DUTIES:

1. Maintains cleanliness of work area and follows safe work practice rules.

1. Performs other miscellaneous duties as required.

CONTACTS:

Internal: Occasional (6-15%)

Contacts are routine and require obtaining or giving information or service.

External: Infrequent (1-5%)

Little or no contacts.

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: One and one-half years commercial, vocational, or other specialized training beyond high school.

Experience: Three to four years related work experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Manual Dexterity: Work requires highly skilled, precise, complicated, and/or difficult manual skill over major portions of the work period.

Physical Effort: Work requires a considerable variety of fairly steady active physical exertion.

Working Conditions: More frequent exposure to disagreeable features.

Hazards: Exposure to hazards that may result in short term work-related absences.
